1st year computer science??

-----------------------------------

I know at my school we will be programing in turing (oh joy :( ) well I was wondering if you could tell me some of the assinments / projects that you are told to do in such course. I know about the final project thing where you make a game or what ever but like just during the year. It is going to be so boring at the begining with all the stupid ppl I got in my school  well and info would be good. Thanx

"put" first, then if statements, loops, infinite loops, conditional, for loops, string manipulation, which means length, index etc. drawing stuff with draw commands, arrays, 2D arrays, procedures, um... visit my site at http://turing.f2g.net its not finished but it does have some of the assignments I did in grade 10.

For me gr 10 compsci was pretty basic, you shouldnt need to sweat the assignments much because they should be pretty easy if there are enough noobs in your class.

The best tip for computer science classes; do your homework.

You don't learn anything, it wastes time teaching you stuff you already know, but this is what they mark. I made the mistake of not doing any homework for the first part of the year, and had almost failed.

everything counts, and turing is easy to learn if you give it a chance.

I only had a few assignments to be marked, so there really wasnt all that much homework for me.

That said, if you read in the forums here alot you'll find the assignments signifigantly easier, and quicker to do as well.

Computer science depends pretty much entirely on how much you care about it, and how good a teacher you have.

I thought the name was familiar. Though last time he was around, he had that lamer rank...
Well, coming from the same lineage of the great Hacker Dan, I'm sure he'll do fine.

OMG!! I had my real first comp sci class. Man it is soooo easy. All the people in my class are stupid :wall: so we;re going to go REALLY slow. The teacher said that by in like a month or 2 we will do a question and anserw thing. Wow thats hard  not! Well I think I'll do well. Hacker Dan tought me well. :P :notworthy: :D And all you other great ppl at compsci sure help out a lot. 90%+ here I come!!! :D

Absolutely. There's nothing magical about programming. It's an art, yes, and that takes talent, but talent can be developed.

um... even so, watch out for tricky shit your teachers like to throw at u on ur first week, like find every syntax problem in a 50 line program on paper...

I didn't much care for the pencil and paper stuff either. Especially the number systems, which had no value to the course as far as i can see.

Yeah its my first week of computer science too, but grade eleven. i didnt take the grade 10 one though, so i had less turing knowledge than pretty much everyone else on the first day. so far all weve done is really basic stuff like gets and puts. and all our tests are WRITTEN!

Why written?! Its computer class, let us use the computers even if its just on notepad.. i cant even read my own writing lol

Tha whould be due to them being woried about poleop cheating when using comps. But ushely good comp classes do both, a write test and a make this in 20 mins sort of question on the computer.

I never understund why they make u wirte out computer progames on papaer, it just makes not logical secen b/c every one makes type-os. And almost every time u make a comp progame that is not somting basick and done in a few lines there will be bugs a typ-os just b/c u like hit the wrong key or somting. That is what a debuger is for :p

Also i never got why u need flow charts, i mean they are good for small progames but try making one for a masive progame that incorpeters OOP, it is like a crazy web of lines and boxs that gose on forever. I guse they could be go to sumzers larg sections of code but the way they teach u to make them using every line as a box is nuts. Think about what the flow char for somting like linux whould look like.

The written tests that I did in grade 11 were a joke. All you had to know was some basic syntax, and be able to write out a few simple programs on paper.

The rest of the course was writing stupid programs from the book, that would take me about 20 minutes to do all 20 questions, and would take the rest of the class a week. In many of the comp sci classes I've seen, the majority of kids really do suck, and don't care enough to even try, which keeps the class moving so slow, that if you were to actually go at that speed, you would learn next to nothing all year. So be ready to teach yourself ALOT if you wanna actually be good.

And I think they try and use flow charts to get the students to think in an "algorithmic" fashion when they program. I dont think anyone expects people to write out flowcharts for massive programs, It's just a way to get newer programmers thinking in the mindset of how a computer processes information.

Hi, I'm new to turing too, my first class in grade 11, there wasn't turing, only hardware, and it looks like its going to be that way for a week or two... so... anyone wanna help me at turing? :)

Wow! when I accualy started this course a week ago and looked at the outline I thought I was going to learn something new. Even if it was only a little something. Now I'm sarting to think that I was wrong. Its been 2 weeks and we havn't even toughed to computers yet!!! And guess what we are going to learn next week! HOW TO SAVE A TURING FILE!! Hmm let me think maybe if it hit the GUI butten that says save. oh that was difficult. Man they should make comp sci into an academic class nun of this open crap. Well at least I'll have some time in the morning to sleep b4 math class and I like the teacher he's pritty good. Not his fault that there are so many stupid ppl in the class.

Yea... thats the way it goes though (especially in first year), if u wanna learn, come up with an idea for a program you wanna make, and when making it, I'm sure you'll learn somethings you don't know and u need for it.

we worked about 2 weeks on put, and spacing and shit :P

Yes, spacing is so importent in turing. It is not like u could just hit a buttion and it whould do it for you :P

But you do whont good spacing systels in other langs b/c it is allways good when other poleop can read what the heck you are trying to progame.

I'd say the "hardest" thing was string manipulation. The commands in themselves aren't hard or complicated at all, its just it takes "some" thinking to actually put them together to good use.

Oh lol being in enriched program enabled me to take turing in Grade 9. I didn't do any hmewrk thinking that i would ace it easily lol. In the end (February 2005), i gotta tell ya, there was a time where i was thinking about whether i will pass or fail, ah but hell, i passed with 85% (coulda done better) by simply doing my homework
