The Ultimate 'Essential' Program List

-----------------------------------

Here is a list of all of the amazing free programs out there, so you don't have to resort to piracy.

Okay, so you want to steal programs off of the internet, but you realize that Kazaa is junk for everything except for music. Err, make backup copies of all of those cds that you own. That's what I mean.

Well, here's a list of some useful programs and websites for that stuff too.

Getting Kazaa is kind of hard to do lately. All of a sudden, everyone started charging money for the versions of Kazaa lite. OldVersion.com used to have a copy on it, but that site mysteriously disappeared I just found out, so I have no idea. Google it up, something'll surface eventually. Damn Nazi's.

That's all that I can think of at the moment. Feel free to add to this list.

Nimo CodecPack - contains all the codecs you'll ever need to play music, video and stream files. Different builds allow for customization for hardcore media freaks.

Net Transport - prolly my favourite download manager. batch downloads, and the option (only with IE ... not sure about Firefox) to selectively download anything and everything off of one page (vids, pics, files). Pretty damn fast, and plenty of options. http://www.xi-soft.com/download.htm

Visual Boy Advance/MAME - hey, I don't feel like paying money to play MvC and Advance Wars 2, so these emulators are good alternatives (ROMS are far harder to come by though, especially MAME ROM's)

ahh... how could i forget.....

RamPage - It goes next to system clock, your double click and it will free memory up from programs that forget to free, or just mismanaged memory, works great especially from turing(forgetting Pic.Free or Font.Free etc... or with computer with less then 128 mb ram, but can be used with computer withs 512 MB ram (ive tried it) works good

you can make it free up to a certain ammount, or just free x amount more ram.... very handy....

http://www.jfitz.com/software/RAMpage/

AddKiller - Buypin ok.. for all u peeps still using IE... or if u need to use IE forsomething that firefox cant ... this is for u! .... simply right click on this little bulleye on system tray, move mouse to 'add rule', a drop down list comes up with all active windows.... simply select the one u DONT want to see agan.... BOOM.... it closes... and if that winow tries to open again... it auto kills it... .. like right now... Compsci.ca :: Post Reply... if i blocked this window, anytime that TITLE comes up... it would be closed... handy... also can limit open windows to x ammount... good for 'underground sites with lots of pop ups' just limit to 2, one for searching, one for the pop up window with the information

www.buypin.com (yea, program at source forge now...)

IRFANVIEW!!!!!!! cant beleive no one has said this one yet....

Irfanview is the BEST free IMAGE program out there!!! can do some image effects, coller filters etc, but mostly a Image, Sound, Movie Viewer / Converter.... can convert from ANY format to ANy other Format... its INSANE!!!! can even open up autocad images.... nice printing interface... slideshows.. fullscreen...screensaver maker, nero burning, mp3 player... download the full plugins thingy too... opens program in .1 seccond...

-----------------------------------

yea... that only happens if u use rampage when no more ram is available..

i can free all 64 mb of my ram if i wanted... but oviously OS and other running programs will just steal it back...

rampage will steal ram taht a program may need (if u keep clicking on it)... then the program will just take it back..

u just kidna gota know ur flow point (what ram u have left when nothing is running) and only free up to that point.. then ur fine..

rampage is the best for me since i only have 64 mb ram...... after closing a program some dont free the memory they were using... and it allows me to run at peak mempory at all times...

its really more beneficial then u thijnk... hell before i had it i never knew that i only had 5MB free after running some programs then closing them.

ull be shocked how much u acually have left (about 3 hours after u first boot ur pc)... resource meter is much differnet then this..

Mplayer is prity good when it is not casuing masive errors that requize it to be reinstalled.

hmm i have no problems as such.. i compiled it my self.. works perfectly.. (btw: compiled on SuSE)

watching movies/anime on this thing is better than watching it on windows. Its much more responsive and no lag time between audio/video ever. Not only that, sound effects and video quality is just outstanding.

but once u compile mplayer it's not just going to work out of the box.

i suggest compiling with the following commands:
cd /mplayer/source/directory
./configure --enable-menu --enable-gui --enable-largefiles
make
sudo make install

NOTE: the configuration above will install mplayer with all optimizations and all features, so long as ur platform supports it and you have the required libraries and repsective header files (-dev packages)

this will create mplayer, gmplayer and mencoder in /usr/local/bin
to use gmplayer you need to download a font file and a skin from their website. after that you need to extract those .tar.default

Now even after all this it will give problems if it is not correctly set. open gmplayer and right click it and select properties.. then quicky choose a font (the one u downloaded from the website) and then select the audio tab. selec OSS, now select the Video tab and select xv (it might be tempting to chose other like gl but you shouldn't it just degrades performance) now that should do it.. if u want u can also make sure mplayer uses the ffmpeg codec for encoding and decoding for optimised feedback.

PS:There is a catch to compiling stuff your self: you have to take care of the dependencies your self. In SuSE its quite problematic unless you decided to install "everything". If not i suggest install the whole of GNOME, then install all the C++ utils and compilers (u should switch fomr search to selections for this) then search for lib and aslo for dev (switch back to search heh) and installl as much as you can or want to. but make sure u dont just install libs alone, you need the respective -dev packages as well. also install all from the multimedia section as well.[/b]

Ya i know, thats how i installed mine too and i did install everything :p. I look in to it and it seems that it only crashs when i have some other media player going at the same time .

One good tip for SuSe is to add some other sorces for YaST, like:

ftp-linux.cc.gatech.edu/pub/suse/suse/i386/9.1/

has all the stuff in the for verson of suse and that is not in the noraml one

and

http://packman.iu-bremen.de/suse/9.1

that has helped me alot by seting them as sorces so i do not have to go looking for all the things that are dependedt for a package i am trying to install. I also have a copy of the cd files on my hdd as a sorce just in case i need them for some reason.

rizzix, have you tryed to run xMule or aMule on SuSE? I have been having some system luck ups only while ruing thos affter about 15mins-1h of having them runing.

how strange.. we both have the same OS, and strangly it gving you problems.. did u install suse from FTP or did u install the personal .iso or maybe somthing else.. i installed mine through the FTP method, that way you get the latest of stuff. o do a YOU (yast online update) might fix thing out, then try re-compiling it.

would a router firewall stop college 'computer monitoring' ..with or without zone labs firewall....??. cuz i dont wana have to give up that... or get caught..

yea i going to use my firewall at my dorm so i can use my ps2 and computer .... and that should work even thought the dorm would already be on a network.. rite??

ummmm, a fire wall is not going to stop them from telling what kind of netwrok trafick you are using/doing. Athougth i whould deftaly use one in a dorm to stop poleop from geting in to your computer tho. I blive that they monitor what you are doing online by wtaching the netwrok trafick and looking at the packets and not by puting evil software on your comp so a firewall whould not help. I am prity shure they could tell prity much anything you are doing by just looking at the packets and the only way i could think of stoping that whould be ecripting them some how but both you and the server on the net side (ie. the web page) whould have to sport that and it is ushely only done for loging in to secuer webpages and when ordering stuff online.

All these concerns about the school monitoring what you're doing... since it seems it's aimed at basically exploiting Windows to monitor your network activity, bring a Mac.

Or get cable internet in the dorm. Every school I've ever seen lets students sign up for cable TV in their rooms, and there shouldn't be anything stopping you from extending that to cable internet.

as far as i know, they would not invade your privacy so the stuff on your computer is safe, but since you are using their internet service they have a right to monitor your traffic, as dan said...
so dont even think about kazaa, torrets and stuff like that
yeah you could probably get ISP in your dorm, if you can afford it

There's also the problem of bandwidth. You have to realise that if the school is providing internet access to you and another 10000+ students, that's one hell of alot of data being transferred both ways even if you aren't downloading porn and pirated software. If you're using their internet access, they will limit your bandwidth.

Windows XP comes with CD burning capability.

If you want to make mp3's into an audio cd, use Windows Media Player.

I'm curious, are you guys really worried about a crackdown on pirated software at university? I'm sure it's a bad idea to do the pirating over there, but will they actually check your computers for it?

As far back as '98 campus Resnet admins were already paranoid and tyrannical. Do not tempt their wrath, because they will shut you down if they even suspect you're breaking the rules. Plus, the day-to-day operations are usually run by upperclassmen who haven't yet figured out that they're not God's gift to computer science, and they often have very little respect for underclassmen, in my experience.

Do you know how most unis are moderting the content on there net? Are they just checking how much bandwith u use? the ports? or are they acutaly anzaling the packets to find out if they belong to any p2p app?

use JetAudio instead of Winamp, it's as Linux is to Windows.
And you shouldnt use XP to burn music cds if you have cdrw, they wont work.

i dont think so!

all the sttations ive seen are windam compatiple and maybe windows media player or real

the non presense of jetplayer means ... SHITY ONLINE READIO... so it = sucky!

but true.... windows xp built in burning is slow and shity... (that i know cuz ive used it... very blah... ).... BurnQuick is a FAR better burning program!
