----------------------------------- Martin Sat Jun 12, 2004 1:31 pm The Ultimate 'Essential' Program List ----------------------------------- Here is a list of all of the amazing free programs out there, so you don't have to resort to piracy. Okay, so you want to steal programs off of the internet, but you realize that Kazaa is junk for everything except for music. Err, make backup copies of all of those cds that you own. That's what I mean. Well, here's a list of some useful programs and websites for that stuff too. Getting Kazaa is kind of hard to do lately. All of a sudden, everyone started charging money for the versions of Kazaa lite. OldVersion.com used to have a copy on it, but that site mysteriously disappeared I just found out, so I have no idea. Google it up, something'll surface eventually. Damn Nazi's. That's all that I can think of at the moment. Intresting tho, turing works in it :P ----------------------------------- rizzix Sun Aug 08, 2004 12:39 pm ----------------------------------- Mplayer is prity good when it is not casuing masive errors that requize it to be reinstalled. hmm i have no problems as such.. i compiled it my self.. works perfectly.. (btw: compiled on SuSE) watching movies/anime on this thing is better than watching it on windows. Its much more responsive and no lag time between audio/video ever. Not only that, sound effects and video quality is just outstanding. but once u compile mplayer it's not just going to work out of the box. i suggest compiling with the following commands: cd /mplayer/source/directory ./configure --enable-menu --enable-gui --enable-largefiles make sudo make install NOTE: the configuration above will install mplayer with all optimizations and all features, so long as ur platform supports it and you have the required libraries and repsective header files (-dev packages) this will create mplayer, gmplayer and mencoder in /usr/local/bin to use gmplayer you need to download a font file and a skin from their website. after that you need to extract those .tar.default Now even after all this it will give problems if it is not correctly set. open gmplayer and right click it and select properties.. then quicky choose a font (the one u downloaded from the website) and then select the audio tab. selec OSS, now select the Video tab and select xv (it might be tempting to chose other like gl but you shouldn't it just degrades performance) now that should do it.. if u want u can also make sure mplayer uses the ffmpeg codec for encoding and decoding for optimised feedback. PS:There is a catch to compiling stuff your self: you have to take care of the dependencies your self. In SuSE its quite problematic unless you decided to install "everything". If not i suggest install the whole of GNOME, then install all the C++ utils and compilers (u should switch fomr search to selections for this) then search for lib and aslo for dev (switch back to search heh) and installl as much as you can or want to. but make sure u dont just install libs alone, you need the respective -dev packages as well. also install all from the multimedia section as well.[/b] ----------------------------------- Dan Sun Aug 08, 2004 2:10 pm ----------------------------------- Ya i know, thats how i installed mine too and i did install everything :p. I look in to it and it seems that it only crashs when i have some other media player going at the same time . One good tip for SuSe is to add some other sorces for YaST, like: ftp-linux.cc.gatech.edu/pub/suse/suse/i386/9.1/ has all the stuff in the for verson of suse and that is not in the noraml one and http://packman.iu-bremen.de/suse/9.1 that has helped me alot by seting them as sorces so i do not have to go looking for all the things that are dependedt for a package i am trying to install. I also have a copy of the cd files on my hdd as a sorce just in case i need them for some reason. rizzix, have you tryed to run xMule or aMule on SuSE? I have been having some system luck ups only while ruing thos affter about 15mins-1h of having them runing. ----------------------------------- rizzix Sun Aug 08, 2004 2:22 pm ----------------------------------- no, well not yet. i'll look into it tonight Ya i know, thats how i installed mine too and i did install everything :p. I look in to it and it seems that it only crashs when i have some other media player going at the same time Rolling Eyes. how strange.. we both have the same OS, and strangly it gving you problems.. did u install suse from FTP or did u install the personal .iso or maybe somthing else.. i installed mine through the FTP method, that way you get the latest of stuff. o do a YOU (yast online update) might fix thing out, then try re-compiling it. ----------------------------------- JHanson90 Mon Aug 16, 2004 11:07 pm ----------------------------------- [url=http://www.vim.org/]Vim - A complex but extremely useful file editing program.
