Number game: 1,3,4,6--> make 24
-----------------------------------
as topic, you're only allowed to use "basic" math symbols, including +,-,*,/, and brackets

eg: 1+2*3+4=11

*13+46=59 IS NOT ALLOWED

5,5,5,1 try to get 24 with that
3,3,8,8 try to get 24 with that

both are possible, btw.

oh, the answer for 1,3,4,6 is

6 / (1 - (3/4))

easy

I'm pretty sure it doesn't...

I've been playing the 24 game for quite some times. Namely because my Chinese translator has that on it (and tetris, the 2 games I play on it), and when I get bored or whatever, I just play that.

ok... so would this work???

2*12=24? or do i need more terms??? or does all the numbers (2,12) have to total 24 when added????

no, you have 4 numbers, and you try to make 24 out of it. Usually you play this with a deck of cards. like you draw 4 cards, and then try to make 24 according to the face value of those cards.

another for 1,3,4,6 is

(1^3)*4*6
for 5,5,5, 1 its

((sqrt (5 * 5)) * 5) - 1

hehehe, sorry Cervantes, notice the rule, only basic math operators, namely, the +, -, * and / could be used. No square root, no power, no log, no sin, cos, tan, blah blah blah.

harder to explain without drawing on paper... hmm

like that

but if go into Turing and do

put 8 / (3 + (3/8))

it doesn't give you 24. cuz it doesn't know bedmas.

the pic up there is the same as:
http://members.lycos.co.uk/iiharlssoabwd/8833_check.bmp
yes?
if so thats 8/3 + 64/ 3 = 72 / 3 = 24.

EDIT: shows how much I do in civics class...[/i]

Yes, Turing does know the order of operations. Your statement doesn't give you 24 because is should be 3 - 3/8 instead of plus.

um.
8/3 - 8/3/8 = 8/3 - 64/3 = -56/3 not= 24

however

8/3 + 8/3/8 = 8/3 + 64/3 = 72/3 = 24. like in the previous post.

yes?

8/3/8= (8/3)*(1/8 ) = 8/24 = 1/3

which is not 64/3

your not multiplying 8/3 by 1 / 8 though.

dunno how to explain it without drawing.. dunno if i could with drawing
however, take a calculator that has the fraction key and try it. you get 64/3.
The only problem with it is...

IS 8/ (3+ (3/8 )) the same as 8/3 + 8/3/8?

EDIT:
Catalyst. you should be ashamed.
8/(3/8) means we're dividing 8 by 3/8. When dividing fractions, we use the reciprical of the second term and multiply them.
8 / 3/8
= 8 * 8/3
= 64 / 3

8 / ( 3 + ( 3 / 8 ) )
= 8 / ( 27 / 8 )
= ( 8 / 1 ) * ( 8 / 27 )
= 64 / 27

but if you divide 8 by 3 and 8 by 3/8 first then its right.
so, which is done first in this equation: 8 / 3 + (3/8 ). If you add them first, is there anyway to use brackets to make it divide 8 by each? I can't think of one, but then again I'm totally braindead right now

no i shouldnt be ashamed
u missed some brackets

8/3/8 is equal 1/3

8/(3/8 ) is a different question and is equal to 64/3

also multiplying by 1/8 is the same as dividing by 8

finally you cant break up the question like that

1/(5+2) is not equal to 1/5+1/2

it only works when its the other way

(5+2)/3 is equal to 5/3+2/3

yeah, Catalyst's way is the only way of doing that problem. Though it was a hard problem for a 24 game.

Ask bugz if you want more of these, I'm sure he has some, since I got the 3,8,3,8 from him.
