What Language Should I use for Game Development? :shock:

I'm looking to develop basic games (around the level you could do with Flash/Actionscript, but since AS is frowned upon nowadays, which language should I use?
I would ADORE a language similar to AS in the sense that I could simply gather image files and have those appear on the screen upon compiling my program, but does a language exist that can do this?
