It's just the usual pay for extras, like runescape or LoL. It is essentially WoW (like pretty much exactly the same) except free.. Once you understand your class and playstyle, it really isn't hard to figure out the best stats to stack. Usually there's a bare minimum value for certain skills in order to play effectively- for example, a tank needs a minimum of X defence to be uncrushable, which is necessary for tanking bosses (this is no longer the case as of the wotlk expansion). There's also be maximums- if you have 70% chance to hit, there's no point having more than 70% chance to crit, 'cause of the way hits are calculated. I used to spend hours just calculating if item set A is better than B. It's a huge part of the game and people love it. Well technically a non-DK tank needs 102.4% avoidance to be capped. so there still is the X Defense requirement. I was looking into LotRO, but then I took an arrow to the knee :P (By that I mean I started playing Skyrim.
