At one point in time, they used to be used at the CompSci store, however, they now serve no important purpose as far as I know.

Bits (also known as 1337 interweb points) give you e-Power. One bit is equal to a level 80 WoW character*, or, equivalently, one free win against a master league player in a skilled game like StarCraft*.

* Valid only while in stock. Otherwise redeemable for an imaginary pat on the back.

If you post something helpful, maybe someone will give you karma.
If you post something negative, someone might take karma away.

Your karma is basically how much we like you.

Or in the case of ekookman, it's used to make patterns :P

Negative karma can also portray how truthful we are to trolls or how much of a troll we are ourselves sometimes.

It's only like 5 million bits needed, all for a measly 10 Mb of space.

We should make a new account to which everyone donates all their bits just to try it out :P

...but I think you won't want to give away your imaginary pats on the back :D

Actually, only 1000 for email forwarding lite. Quite affordable for the dedicated member. Us classy folk prefer the 1500-bit forwarding- none of this 'lite' crap. But I suppose most users can't afford that, eh?

Anyone can give or take karma. There's a limit to how much you can give so you can't abuse it, but you must've annoyed someone or something.

Hey I'm new to this forum and I keep seeing references to bits and I was just wondering what they are and what they do :P

According to me, A bit is a binary value, & it's the smallest increment of data on a computer. Mainly, one bit can hold only one of two values like 0 or 1, corresponding the electrical values of off or on, respectively.

Someone delete his sig. It's most likely a bot, as the information is misleading as it's taking the topic subject out of context. Not that it's terrible or anything, just best to ruin reason he came for (subtlety (normally) hotlinking to raise search rank).

Signatures are displayed only when logged in, so Google doesn't even see those. It's a good way to spot bot accounts though

Are the Google + Yahoo bots just pseudo users when they show up in the online list?
