Speacialty in computer science?

-----------------------------------

Hi all,
I'm a first year college student majoring in CS. I'm told I need a specialty to be successful in CS, because general programmers have become to common. What is a good specialty for a CS student right now? What's in demand? What is rewarding and challenging?

thanks for any reply

Pretty much any of the upper year courses will be an introduction to some specialty field, so you could pick the area you are interested in the most. Of course when I think "specialty", I'm thinking "grad school research". And other than staying in academia or scoring a position in R&D lab (or some niche startup), that really does not seem like a more available choice than SDE positions.

Who have you been talking to about this?

Mostly just other Computer Science students. I think they where talking about things like web development, security, or mobile. So yeah, I guess I can just take as many CS classes as i can and see what interests me most. Thanks again
