Programming microcontroller?

Does anyone here have experiences programming microcontroller?
I've recently bought a pic 18f4550 and started working on a maze racing photovore.
Just wondering has anyone done anything like this>?

I've done a bit of microcontroller stuff.  Nothing much, but I've made a few things for the Arduino, and a robot or two with PIC chips.
