anti glare screen

-----------------------------------

My netbook screen is way too reflective too the point that it is obsolete when outdoors :(
I've googled antiglare screens and there's wide variety of these things out there for sale and very little information available about the way they work and their quality.

if anyone has any experience with any of these screens please let me know if i should buy or is it a waste of money, and also any specific brands?

thx.

Well If I could discribe a monitor screen in anyway, I would say an lcd screen is kinda like a one way mirror. Light can shine in one way, but is reflected the other :)

Now there are anti glare screens, The only place I have found them is in some cars not as common in labtops for the average user. They are used in rear view mirrors at night time to reduce the brightness of car lights behind you, My father infact had one in his Audi ( 2006 Audi A3) http://www.carforums.net/reviews/makes/pictures/audi04.jpg Until he sold it because he had to by the expensive type of gas for the car always...

pretty sure that wont help.
It's my understanding that light from lcd screen is already polarized. now if i had a non shiney, polarized screen with low refractive index, it would probably solve the problem.
Just need to know which brand is good brand.

I Find a good solution, is a good tree house :). It blockes the sun and I still get to enjoy the out doors lol. However, who has a tree house in cities like toronto? lol. Plus The tree houses arnt very mobile, If they were, they would be called card board boxes.

I bought a film from http://www.photodon.com

It works well, however there are some bubbles/visible dirt below it. Trying to reset the film/remove the stuff only makes it worse. I live with it, and don't notice it.
It makes me mad that all manufacturers are moving to these types of screens they're horrible. It got to the point where I had to stop using my laptop because of the headaches I would get from the glare of the screen (old laptop had a matte screen)

My contact at photodon was MaryEllen@PhotoDon.com
I sent her the measurements for my screen, and was able to order a custom fit one.

Good luck.

Edit: Just looked up invoice, cost $39.22USD shipped to Niagara, Ontario

Something that I found that kinda works, if you don't mind spending a few minuites fooling around with tape and paper, but its like a visor for your screen that you tape to the top of it, parts of the screen are still affected by the sun, but its definately a cheep alternative.

Well it probably does not help if you already have a laptop with a glare problem, you can buy laptops with matte screens that stop alot of the glare. My laptop came with two options, glossy or matte LCD.

Well glossy screens tend to look more shiny and gives more vivid pictures they also have glare and visibility problems under some lighting conditions (aswell as making finger prints and sumges more aprent). Matte screens tend to diffuse ambient light better at the cost of a smaller viewing angle (not normally a problem for laptops if it is just you viewing the screen), less contrast and less vivid images.

Probably worth considering for your next laptop purchase.

Here's a question...would a OLED screen have the same problem?

An OLED screen would do the same I would believe, since its basically an LCD screen, but with a black background, to save energy, when ever black is on the screen, there is no light at that pixel.

The glare comes from the glossy outer protection of the screen, not how the light is created. Essentially the same as looking at a piece of glass with unwanted light coming from the side.

lol@ BigBear....

I was thinking that the glare would be a a lot less, because OLED screens in general are brighter.
