Getting Started with artifical intelligence

hi there,

recently I've read a lot of articles about advances in AI.  I understand it has a lot to do with neural networks.

is there a way i could get involved?  Learn some of this at home?  
My assumption is that expensive equipment is required and the majority of it would not be possible.

is there at least a specific programming language i can learn to get into this field of study?
