how to find servers from the confort of your chair.

-----------------------------------

today i learned how to track down where servers are by backtracking where the connection gets rerouted.

simply go to the cmd. Then type in: tracert [website address here]

Then take the final ip and give it to a ip tracing website such as
http://www.ip-adress.com/ip_tracer/

I did this for compsci and I found it was in,
http://www.ip-adress.com/ip_tracer/64.85.160.31

Yes, this can also be done in Linux and Mac OS systems with the "traceroute" command. It's nothing really new. Also, sometimes if you use "whois" on a website, they will put their address which is a whole lot more accurate than your website.

Edit: typo

Doesn't always help: http://www.bash.org/?5273

hm. I've lost a machine.. literally _lost_. it responds to ping, it works completely, I just can't figure out where in my apartment it is.
