The windows messenger service has nothing to do with MSN or MSN messenger. They are two totally different things that just happened to have a similar name. Windows messenger was originally designed so system administrators could send messages to employees on a large network. However, it wasn't implemented in the best way possible and it essentially allows anyone to display a pop-up message on your computer. This could both be annoying and frightening to users who are not aware of this "feature" of windows XP.

Windows messenger applies to versions of windows based on the NT kernal and does not effect MSN instant messenger in any way.

To turn off windows messenger, go to control panel/administrative tools/services, then scroll down until you see "messenger". Right-click on it and select "Properties". Then click the "start-up type" drop-down menu and select disabled.

Enabled - means that the selected service will always be on.
Automatic - means the selected service will only turn on when it is needed.
Disabled - means the selected service will always be off.

Its recommended to set messenger to disabled because it is more or less useless for home use. Don't disable any other services unless you specifically know what they are for.

Some kids at the catholic school in my town (im in public) got suspended, cause they used net send, and said there was a bomb in the school...lol

there were 3 of them who got suspended, and fined, and one spent the night in jail or something.

so....moral of the story, is don't send bomb threats to schools.
