need help with my laptop battery

-----------------------------------

Ive just bought a used Acer Aspire 3050-1092 for school for 200 bucks.
It works fine on ac adaptor power but as soon as i put in the battery it freezes, so i assume theres a shorted cell in the battery. does anyone know any stores i can buy a battery for it around toronto and the gta?
thanx in advance.

I'd try bestbuy, but if they don't have one try ordering one from the website.

One thing you could try, is turn off the computer, unplug the A/C adapter, take out the battery, hold in the powerbutton for about 10 seconds and then pop the battery in and fire up the computer WITHOUT the A/C adapter.

OR run the battery flat with the computer on (frozen) and then fully recharge it. (this is called cycling the battery, and at least for scale planes the batteries usually will work/ recover a dead cell after doing this 2-3 times)

thx ill try that and let u know the outcome. also i was reading this article saying that if i opened the casing and replaced the actual cells it might take care of the problem, but my problem isn't the battery life, it lasts a decent ammount but that the laptop freezes as soon as i put the battery in, so i was thinking it may actually be the circuit board thats inside. any shared experiences would be appreciated

After a goodle search, it does sound like a battery problem.

a couple sources thought it was:

-dead cell
-mother board problem
-possible setting screw up (make sure the HDD isn't set to turn off on battery)
[couldn't find a fix)

I honestly have no clue what to do with it, besides checking your settings, and trying to do a primitive cycle on thebattery. If this doesn't work try swaping the battery. If that still doesn't work, return the computer.

If it is a Lithium Ion battery, do not drain it to the bone and then recharge it (cycling). They aren't meant to be used like that and do not benefit from it. They DO NOT suffer from the memory effect.

Newer Li-po, Li-ion have protection circuits from causing them to go completely dry. Personally I don't think it will hurt it, because i have cycled Li-Po batteries for model airplanes.

alright, so it turns out that the reason it was freezing was that it was set to turn off the hdd on battery. but the battery doesn't charge even after cycling it so i think im gonna attempts to replace the cells inside.
thx for the help.
