can't get audio

-----------------------------------

Hey guys,

I think Windows is determined to get me to hate it. I installed a crack legal copy of windows xp professional, service pack 3 today, and my speakers aren't working with it. I have also tried plugging in a few types of headphones to see if that fixed it, but windows stubbornly says "no audio devices". Google is useless for this, I've tried. Any ideas? Or shall I just go back to my beloved ubuntu?

Err, you did install an audio driver, right? XP doesn't come with those by default, remember.

You need the drivers for your onboard soundcard or your pci soundcard. Speakers don't use drivers unless they have their own usb DACs.

If you're using the motherboard sound card, then check what kind of chip it's using and download the drivers (they are probably at the motherboard manufacturer's website). If you are unsure, it is probably AC'97. That is the most common one. If you're using a PCI card, then just open the computer and find the card. It should say the brand and model number on there.
