Help for a gr 11?

-----------------------------------

hey everyone,

Im currently a grade 11 with decent math marks and usually in the high 90's for cs. Im staying an extra year in highschool to complete more maths and get higher grades in them, but im wondering if I need sciences? If so, i'll need to take them in my 13th year.

If you are staying an extra year to retake courses you shouldn't worry you don't 90's to be accepted in universities.

Physics is important for Computer Science

Chemistry is important for Software Engineering

If you take 4U or 4M courses then yes.

Most universities take the average of your top 6 4U or 4M courses so if you retake a course and get a higher mark you still earned that higher mark so they can be counted in your top 6.

Also I have heard from people on this forum that Waterloo deducts 1% from your average if you took a course more than once.

wait, they take the 1% off your overall average or just off what you get in the retaken class?
i thought it was the later, but please inform me if i'm mistaken.

Off your overall average. The idea is to discourage people from retaking courses to boost their average.

Yes, 1% is nothing if i can take another course to boost my average 10 or even 5%.

They want a valid reason for retaking a course. If you get a 78 and retook it for an 82, I don't think that's valid (just an example).

I don't plan on really retaking a course, I just plan on taking different courses.. Like more maths.. Also, since i want to go into video game programming, what do you all think of RAC?

I don't know about RAC, but I'm generally kind of wary of those types of institutions. They seem to focus on learning the tools of the day. In my humble opinion, if you want to go into video games, learn the fundamentals. Tools come and go, but the fundamentals you can always rely on. Study computer science, fine arts, film or whatever is applicable to what you want to do in the video game industry. While studying, build up a portfolio. This will allow you to apply what you are learning in school to tools used in industry while actually creating something tangible you can demonstrate to prospective employers. Create an independent game or two, by yourself or with a group. You could do an unreal mod, make an XNA game, or put something together from scratch. Just my two cents on the topic. I'd be interested in hearing what others have to say.
