Hobbies

-----------------------------------

So like, I need a hobby other than computers and anything like that. What do you think a techy would like to do hobby wise? It can't involve computers but possibly other electronics. If you don't have a hobby for me, then just post your own personal hobbies.

I know of someone who draws a parallel between programming and cooking -- music.

Really, it's all about creative expression across different mediums. Pick your "material" (digital, hardware, sound-waves, edible, LEGO, whatever) and put it together into something neat.

Hm, I recommend picking up an instrument. Did you know "math and music" together used to be a university major?

I'm into photography, 'tis a great way of getting out and exploring new places and meeting people. I also do some sailing in the summers, which goes rather well with photography - lots of neat things to photograph.

During the winter I'm actually in a local poker league. Lots of fun, if you try not to take it too seriously. It also helps to be good :P

Warhammer. Combine Collecting, painting, and gaming hobbies into one. If you have money. And don't mind people calling you a nerd (then again, you are into computers...)

if you want a hobbie that takes a lot of time and effort, golf would be perfect.

Off keyboard you say... perhaps Settlers? Or Munchkin? Card games? I would love to do more board gaming but I don't know anyone else in Ottawa who does. Maybe we can wrangle Clayton into it too :P

My suggestion would be to consider each of the following as something to explore and see what works:

1) Creativity work. This could be some form of art that gets you away from the cold hard logic that computers use. The idea here is to work that other side of the brain that doesn't handle the logic.

2) Solving things. Puzzles and mysteries come to mind here for things that can be fun at times.

3) Exercise. Take a walk, go to a gym or do something to be active and away from the computer.

I work in fast food. Cooking as a hobby is pretty next to nill in my books. Music was never my most interesting subject. I'm all that for listening to the beat, but nosomuch for making it.
Warhammer makes me feel really, really tall. I used to play Magic: TG long ago, could pick it back up.
Knowing me, for puzzles I'd somehow lose a piece or two.
I'm doing frisbee in the spring, gotta find out when it starts [doesn't have a first period class]. Golf is golf. Waaaaay too slow in my books.

Thanks for the ideas guys. I'll try out photography with a friend over the break, that and stumbling round downtown in the Dragon or the paths round our city [depends on the weather].

Hahaha, warhammer makes you feel tall? Maybe pick up volleyball? Great way to meet new people, stay in shape and relieve stress.. I go to a place called north beach volleyball academy. They have a wide range of skill levels so you could always find a game that suits you. They run pick up games in the evenings (late nights i should say) on wednesdays fridays and saturdays if you're interested.. I go almost every week.

Windsurfing is also great, if you have two grand to spend on a board. You can learn it in a weekend and you only ever get better. Depending on your location you might get more or less water time but it's damn fun.
