Vb 6.0

-----------------------------------

I've got a new question :
Microsoft legally lets you download Visual Basic 5.0 As well, they legally let you download a free infinite "trial" of Visual Basic 6 - Entrprise Edition. So it's like legally downloading VB 6 EE. However, I cannot find anywhere Visual Basic 6.0 - the normal edition. That's the one I'm looking for. Can anybody think of a way to get it without paying he 4 - 6 hundred dollars for it?
Don't suggest www.*********com or www.**********com MOD: Some torrent sites], I've already checked and found only Visual Basic 6 EE (replacing @ with a, so that compsci won't erase the links MOD: There is a reason for that.]).
thanx

Why on earth would you want it? VB6 is horribly outdated and very archaic with no redeeming factors consider VB.NET... Oh wait.

You're in Highschool aren't you?

Anyway, so's to not derail... No I have never found a working legal copy of VB6 normal, looked all over just 8 months ago.

If you are in high school, you could possible get a copy from your compsci teacher if your school has it (assumed) and your teacher likes you.

Other then that, I don't see any legal methods of getting such software.

nah, it's stuck in our network. She can't extract a copy, and doesn't have a hard-copy.

Ask her to use a language that is freely available and doesn't suck?

I don't understand the problem. What feature of VB6.0 "normal" do you need that the freely available Visual Studio versions won't have?

And a ditto on wtd's comment. Everyone that "gets" compsci, or has the knack should drag schools (kicking and screaming if need be) to offer programming courses such that students don't feel the need to pirate (or feel the need to spend their pizza money) to be able to expand on their studies at home. Given the state of the industry, that is entirely doable and won't cost anything but time and effort.

Cheers

I sincerely doubt she'd change her complete course plan for this.
Ideally, a course plan should be language independent. After all, it's Computer Science, not Introduction to an obsolete language.

Even if the course doesn't change for you this year, there's a next year's class that will go through the same thing, if change is not set into motion now.

Really they should be using something like VB 2005, where the Express edition is available for free download.

However, it would probably be more beneficial to teach something like Python.

Ask your teacher why he/she is not teaching Java?

Powerful, elaborate, small learning curve (if you ask me) and one of the BEST languages to get into OOP.
Freely available IDE's

How old is you teacher? If he/she's a shade off retirement or close to then chances are he or she's too stubborn or even scared to teach you something useful in this day and age.

I would have loved for my high school to take on Python.

As Tony points out. Use anything. But it would be nice if the same system used in school, could be used at home without stealing or breaking the bank. Best if that environment is also used in the professional shop down the street, but not totally necessary while learning.

Dev tools for free, apps for fee. We'll all win.

Crusty old guy lip flapping follows
Whatever happened to learning how chips work and a little bit of assembler? Students get bored? Great; let them take english class and write us better movie scripts. Leave code development to people with the desire, knack and where with all to struggle through.

wow, lotta comments.
@ btiffin (first one) - it's easier to learn than express edition, although I don't really understand it either. Yeah, I'll probably talk to her about it.
@ Tony - yup, that's why I'll talk to her about it.
@delparnel - agreed
@jeffgreco13 - That's a different year's course's language.
@btiffin (the second time) - Cheers

Ask her what happens if there is a catastrophic failure "on the network". Will MS let her have free copies again? Or will the school have to shell out hard earned dollars again?

Simply put, free languages are what should be taught for precisely that reason. Licenses, etc, all stop students from genuinely being able to learn in any situation.

Unfrontly i have long since forgoten witch book it came with and i am not even sure if i have the CD any more.

Tell her to ask the network admin (a.k.a. the tech guy) for a copy. all she has to say it is that she needs to install it at home for lesson plans. Speaking as a person who has teachers for parents, the tech sould give her a copy. If she is going along with your plan, get her to make an image of it, then burn it to a disk and give it to you.

I do not endorse piracy for anything but education. (That includes music piracy. I don't support it and never will.)

@A/V - that's the kicker : the school board is having trouble finding enough copies, even when teachers go directly to the tech. consultant of the board.
