Other languages for the JVM

Does anyone here have experience with other JVM languages? Particularly, has anyone tried the Scheme implementations (Kawa, Bigloo, SISC)? I'm interested in learning more about programing languages/compilers and also virtual machines. Is there any project a beginner can join to learn new things and also contribute code?
