Technical Writing; OpenCOBOL

-----------------------------------

Ladies, Gentlemen,

If you feel like volunteering some time on an open source project, maybe gaining some programming skill on the side, and like technical writing, consider COBOL. The OpenCOBOL project, at http://opencobol.org is in active development and could use some good documentation and sample source code.

The site has a wiki, but the goal is to build up open-cobol.texi a TeXinfo file. If you'd like to participate, check out the site and drop a note on one of the forum threads, or drop a message here.

COBOL may seem a little out dated to the up and coming technical leaders that make up compsci.ca, but solid skills in the language make for a nice resume entry.

OpenCOBOL 1.0 is released, Roger While is enhancing the 1.1 pre-release on nearly a daily basis and there is lots to do.

Cheers

A documentation push in on. FAQ to be written, User Guide, Reference Manual, Sample Programs

Roger is just about to create a samples/ directory for the next 1.1 tarball. I've started the FAQ. The open-cobol.texi file needs a lot more info nodes.

Check out http://opencobol.org in the forum for details.

And anyone that wants to work on a libcurl binding, now is a good time for that as well.

It may not make you famous, but it'll get your name involved with an important Open Source project - one being watched by some big wig corporate players from what I've been lead to believe. Plus, OC 1.1 really does kick some serious butt.

Cheers
