A Quick Question on Networking

So for my new house, I've decided to go with Teksavvy as my ISP.  However, being the cheap bastard that I am, I don't want to pay the $100 for their modem, so I've decided to get one used off of Ebay.  While searching for modems, I've noticed that there are single and multi-PC modems.  Now, my question is this: are multi-PC modems simply regular modems with built-in router functions, and if so, would attaching a router to a single PC modem work in the same way?
