IBM (or Lenovo) are not as expensive and i have not heard about any problems. The school gave some R series laptops to the "Special Needs" students. for me I would go more IBM then apple because I'm more of the windows guy. They cost alot but you also get alot of computing power. My lastlap top was from [url=http://www.eurocom.ca/]Eurocom. They have some of the most up to date hardware that you can not even find in laptops in most places. For example my new laptop is a intel quad core cpu when most stores are still selling duel cores. There laptops do not look as cool as alineware and are more blukly but they are fully upgradable. If you are looking for most a cheaper model for just taking notes and surfing the web, i recomend hp laptops. If you like watching dvds or playing games on your laptop a 17" could be helpfull, but if this laptop is just for note taking then 15" is fine. the 17" can add alot of size, weight and cost to your laptop so it may not be a good idea unless you are going to use it. Edit: it can also be hard to see over a 17" depending on how your clases are set up so it may not be the best option if your class rooms are very crowed and you have to look down on the prof since they use elviated seating. A lot of older devices refuse to work with it and your frame rates in games will drop, plus some software a lot of people rely on will not work with it anymore.
