i worked up the courage to install microsoft vista RTM... and guess what? the installation failed 10 times (on the grounds that the installation disk is corrupt). seems that many other people are having this problem but no fix...
so much for vista...

I believe this is another situation where the line between "courage" and "stupidity" are seriously blurred.

as part of my courageous effects to try ms products, i looked into office 2007.
This is what i came up with. a simple word document with some ole objects. Notice how screwed up the lines are. I have no way of fixing it. meh cant attach anything, tried to upload it to the gallery but didnt work either :O

I can't really think of any reliable software by Microsoft. Word doesn't open odt files. Even Fable thinks my athlon 3500 is less than 1ghz.

Re: courage

they are as reliable as most other pieces of software... people just make bigger deal out of it. it isnt like you havent seen security holes in firefox, for example. i think the vista installation problem is probably due to some hardware incompatibility, and the office2k7 problem i've had is probably some software incompatibility problem with the OLE stuff i've been using.

however i was expecting something much better.

It's not like Vista got delayed for several years which would allow hardware vendors to write drivers for it or anything...

not at all, Vista came out right on time. There's no possible way anyone could've written drivers for Vista.

I also hear that Vista has some compadibility error with 3D sound, and with alot of older games. You think microsoft would be a little more prepared...

i tried in safe mode and obviously it failed again. although its interesting to notice that the installation in safe mode takes 10 times as long.

What? Not compatible with old games? Whats this useful for then? :/

Is it faster compared to XP? Who here is using Vista (with full success in installing).

By the way, I had been testing out Office 2007 (during the beta) and I kinda liked it - though the print alignment still wasn't fixed, which was annoying. And yes, compatibility issues with older .doc files.

Let's be fair. You're trying out an RTM version, which means there's a 99% chance you're using a leaked, pirated copy. It is hardly reasonable to blame Microsoft for not supporting your pirated copies. Yes, it is an RTM release which means it should be ready, but there are a lot of other points of failure between the source and the cracker. This is almost certainly not MS's fault.

See my post in the other thread about how you can get a free, legal copy of the real Vista from UW. I'm all for Microsoft bashing, but let's at least play the game fairly :)

Yeah, i know, i'm a real retro gamer, and now if this becomes the standart, i think i'll be a little screwed. Even if microsoft fixes the current bugs with the new OS, who says that many problems will remain.

And, hell no, it's not fater than XP, if you need 40GB HD free and 1GB RAM just to INSTALL it, then it can't be any faster than a PII 600Mhz running XP. Meaning, hella slow.

Although it has nice GUI, i'll post some screenshots when i get time.

Vista isnt meant for older games, its stated quite clearly that they didnt really care about backwards compatibility ... see: DX10
