The Ubuntu 6.10 - Edgy Eft has been released as 
The final stable version will be released in October 2006.

Some improvements. Newer, faster startup. GNOME 2.16. A load of new software, and an updated theme.

I'm excited even just for the updates to gedit. Still, I'm waiting for the official release, and hoping my laptop will be more agreeable with it than with Dapper.
