Mac VS PC

what do you think is better? This is not about operating systems. This is about the computer in general.

Me, personaly, i think the PC will prevail.

not about the operating system? so like.. hardware?

Then Mac, without a question - as the 'computer in general' could run any OS (Mac, Linux, Windows), while a PC is limited to just the last two.

Otherwise the Intel architecture is fairly similar anyways.. so ultimately it depends on the manufacturer. Clearly Sony has better quality assurance than Dell.

I agree. Of course, the Mac is kinda limited in the gaming and upgradable areas, but less viruses, and less spyware is a good thing too.

Overall.... Mac > PC

I think that this entire pol is flawed (as in the Mac advertising campain) because a PC is s personal computer; and as such a Mac IS a PC ;)

I think that mac hardware is great, but isn't as flexible as some other harware out there. Really it all depends on what you want to use your computer for :P

Well I find Macs are rare around my place I'm sure they will be more common in the cities. I also stick with a PC because my school uses programs that aren't compatable with a Mac.

Here are a couple of vids I found about Macs. They are quite funny, and some of my friends who are Mac lovers think it's funny.

Either way, as long as it runs FreeBSD I'm happy. Cheaper (and reliable) hardware is a definite plus.

While on the topic, I'm not too fond of Solaris, but the Sun Ray setup is rather nifty.

The point is that there are a lot more types of hardware than PC or Mac. Though most of the others are geared towards the corporate world, and you wouldn't normally encounter them unless you work for a bunch of different IT companies.

I've never had any major problems with my pc because I know how to prevent spyware and virii.

And Andy is correct, most busineses use Windows so that's an important factor to consider.

So for my vote, I'll just say that buying a mac has NEVER crossed my mind.

Well... to clarify that, Macs are cheaper than equivalently configured Dells. Obviously Dell can offer a very low-end machine, but for the target market segment, Macs are very compeditivly priced.

Maybe. I don't know all that much about the target market segment, but for myself, I'd much prefer to buy a reliable, fairly high end PC than spend that money on a Mac where it is being spent on things other than performance/reliability/etc.

Simply put, from what I've seen, you get less for your money when buying a Mac.

I've actually found that mac hardware is worth it if the hardware does what you want. At least as far as laptops go. For desktop machines I tend to play with a lot of different hardware, and macs aren't known for their hardware support (independent of OS, there are hardware incompatibilities).

Mac OS X is nice; but I like linux (Gentoo!) more.

I think everyone is still overlooking a simple fact.

Buy a Mac and you can run Mac OS X, Windows, Linux, *BSD, Solaris, etc.

Buy a personal computer from anyone else and you're left with one less option, operating system-wise.

So... the Mac is somehow less capable, and offers less choice?

I know of at least one person who bought a Mac Laptop with the intend of using Linux on it as the primary OS.

Mac Laptops are an excellent choice, and do give you an option for one more OS than anything else. OSX has some exceptional native apps, anything is yet to come close to Adium

The use of a MAC for the intent of using Linux sounds like alot of work. Then again, i'm no computer genius, and barely know a thing about any other OS than Windows. It jsut sounds like alot of work, to uninstall the OS that MACs come with and then install a diffrent OS.

It also sounds like alot of things can be screwed up in th process, converting all the drivers and stuff.

Just wondering though, cause i've been thinking that i should try out Linux out once i get my new computer as the primary OS and have windows as a secondary.

My CompTech teach has on his laptop both OS, but he can choose wich one to boot up. it sounds likle a pretty good idea.

Why would you have to uninstall anything?

Just use Apple's own Boot Camp software to install Linux in a dual-boot arrangement with Mac OS X. Then you can install Windows and use the Linux bootloader of your choice to triple-boot.

Really, I think you should get to know more about the reality of the situation before posting a poll like this.

Alright guys, lets learn to back up the statements we claim.

Now I'm well aware that OSX doesn't run Autodesk's AutoCAD. So setting games aside into their own category (I prefer console gaming anyways), what kind of software do Macs lack? Because in my experience it's the PCs that don't have the option to dual-boot into OSX and run my applications of choice.

Like Gandalf says you can't count Mac OS as a plus if you don't like it or don't intend to use it. When it comes right down to it the choice between a Mac and a PC (god I hate that acronym... a mac used for personal computing is a PC for christs sake) is one of personal choice. There are pros and cons to either one; but those pros and cons are more a matter of choice then anything else.

It's not a mistaken assumption. You're assuming that is the assumption we're making. ;)

We're not. We're assuming that people who take about "choice" being a good thing would want to buy a computer that gives them the most choice in terms of software.

No, a Mac does not offer the absolute greatest level of hardware choice, but what you do get is good hardware at a good price. Assuming you don't want a bottom of the barrel configuration, what other choice could a person want? :)

The "good price" part might be farfetched. Anyways, I'm not only talking about personal program. Mac is just not as popular as PCs and you might have some trouble trying to cross files between the two. Sure, many things are portable but some are still not.

Tony, BenLi may not be totally wrong. From that wikipedia link you provided:In March 2006, Microsoft revealed that it will not support EFI for Windows Vista at launch, and will never support EFI booting on 32-bit CPUs due to lack of support from PC manufacturers and vendors. EFI support for x64 versions of Windows Vista will be included in a later service pack. Also, for testing purposes, the beta 2 release of Windows Vista "will include support for EFI"

That is easily remedied. EFI is flexible enough to emulate a classic BIOS.

Mactels have been running Vista natively for quite some time.
