Well, it's a rough way of measuring the amount of time people spend talking to each other. The thickness of the lines and the length of them determine the strength of the bond. How does it work besides that? Before last night, it was only running for maybe a few hours at a time which means it was reset every time. Thanks to a crash (ask Dan ;-)) and my tendency to move my laptop around, it wasn't up for very long at a time. Now it's running on a stable machine and should generate a fairly complex diagram in the next few days. Oh, and the diagram updates often. In fact, it's uploaded every minute. Also of interest might be the not write the bot that generates these images.
