New Compsci Idea

-----------------------------------

The idea of making Compsci.ca more school orented has come up, and Tony had the idea of making fourms just for each school. the way this whould wrok is each school that whonts one whould get a user group here at compsci, only the users in this gourp could see there schools forum. there whould be a school mod for each gourp/school which whould have the same powers that the normal mods do here but just in there schools fourm. also the school mod whould be respobale for keeping there user gourp for there school good, ie not letting dumass in, ect.

each school whould have a few fourms like. mostly a genreal one and a some for each progaming lague they whont.

we whould like your opione on this idea, and of cores the existing fourms whould still saty just we whould have hiden ones for each shool.

-----------------------------------

that's a good idea, tho i think we could still keep the general forum with it so that we can talk with each other, while talking with our school friends. Cuz probably we may not know stuff, but other ppl do. so yah..that's my opinion bout it

ok, i apologize in advance if i sound too harsh but honestly, what the hell would be the point of that?! all you're really accomplishing by doing that is dividing a community that is already small enough.

and seriously, why the hell would anyone need a message board for their school? if you go to the same school, would you not see that person just about every day? can you not email/call/visit this person if you need to say something?

really, what's the purpose?

Sun Jun 01, 2003 3:30 pm

no point

-----------------------------------

Dan, there probably is not point. Although it would be a good Idea, there would be only like 3 - 5 people from each sckewl. 1 mod for 5 people is not nessisary, and making 20 diff. forums for skewl would be lots of work. I would wait till there are more ppl.

-----------------------------------

I think it's a bad idea just for the fact that if you want help from friends at your school you could arrange for something other then at this site. Also there is only 3 people from my school on compsci and to have all the extra would be big time pointless. So nah I dont think it would be to great of an idea

I agree with that too. There is absolutely no point.

Tony

Sun Jun 01, 2003 7:11 pm

-----------------------------------

well the idea was not to divide up the community, but to let schools have a sord of their own compsci forum. Here's what I mean:

My compsci teacher wanted to make a forum for our school similar to mine, and I told him to just use compsci (thats where the idea came from).

Or do you guys remember Delta? He made a compsci forum for his school... The idea here is that all those forums would be hosted on the compsci along with other forums.

What schools will be posting are their assignments and stuff like that. Maybe discussions about school specific problems.

i think schools having there own forums isnt a bad idea but
i worry that it might hurt the main sites usage

-----------------------------------

Tony

Sun Jun 01, 2003 7:24 pm

-----------------------------------

thats why we put the question up for a discussion... how and why do you think it will hurt the main site?

If you have bandwidth in mind, we're planning on upgrading our plan.

-----------------------------------

Martin

Sun Jun 01, 2003 8:54 pm

-----------------------------------

No it's not bandwidth. I don't think that people would end up posting in the school forums. I mean, if you can have the five people in the school forum's help vs. having all of the site's help, most people would choose the big forum.

Just on a side note, it would be cool if you could make it so that at the shop you could 'buy' your own private forum, available only to the members of your choice and (obviously) the site mods.

what about the ppl that only have a few ppl that go to their school that post on the site? what about catalyst. theres no one else that goes to his school that posts on this forum.. it would be a good idea if there were more than a couple ppl from each school..

-----------------------------------

Tony

Mon Jun 02, 2003 9:38 am

-----------------------------------

but thats the point. Forums will be created only for schools that want to. We dont create it for each user on compsci. If a teacher wants a forum for their compsci classes, we assist them with that.

Besides, forums will just be user for stuff like school assignments and discussion of class material.

-----------------------------------

ok - then thats a good idea.... i would support that.. but only make a forum in that section for each programming language that's needed... dont go and make like 50 million generals and 50 million submissions here... i'd only make a help for each or something like that

-----------------------------------

Tony

Mon Jun 02, 2003 10:59 am

well if there's something they'll need help with, they should post in general area (existing compsci)

though you'll be free to join school groups if you're bored... such as some schools (Vincent Massey) might post up some very interesting challanges that many students might find interesting. And you get to pick which schools you would like to view, so you dont get overwhelming amount of threads when browse

True dat. Splitting up an already small community is dumb, as is the thought of the crap that ppl from my school could create. I mean, if that mod does anything he might just be beaten up at school, who knows?

I also feel putting the submissions of students in school folders is a bad idea; if I need help, I'm gonna ask the person, not wait till he uploads it here.

So thanks for considering us little schoolchildren, but I'm happy in this community. I don't need another reason to yell at my friends.

Alright, for those who this escaped, let me explain my logic. First of all, I recommend reading the article over just looking at the picture. The guy was complaining that, at his orgy, everyone had different porn preferences, so that if he let everyone have a room with their preference, there would only be one or two people per room, MUCH like it would be if there were school forums.

mebbe what you do is set a price for a forum, and the idea is you get a group of people from that one school to chip in bits and purchase it. then only they and the mods have access to that board

or mebbe those people and the mods can post, but the rest of the people can only view and download

this is sorta neat but screws over newcomers after the board's been bought.

I think you people still miss the point of the whole idea. Its not here to divide us, but to bring in other communities into ours.

A school that is interested, might use our tools to make their own forum within ours, brining in people from that school... Members that are more interested then in just reading school related posts will move on to visit forums of the outter (existing) community. 8)

I hope this explains things better

I agree wholeheartedly. I go to a relatively smaller school and as far as I know noone from my school goes here. If we make a board however our schools comp teacher can spread the word and bring in ppl if they want help. I also think that it should be languages in general cuz we have diff languages at our school .
