I'm really not sure what to think of that. Can't say I care for the name much. Aside from that... I dunno. I like my Ubuntu the way it is. What changes will Google be making?

I also like Ubuntu the way it is, and I also didn't like that name Goobuntu maybe gubuntu would work a little better, but either way I like ubuntu and I think all stick with it for a while longer. I like google, and think if they can pull this off it would be good for those "noobs" out there who can't use linux cause it's too "hard" to use

nick, here is what i did. i used partition magic to spin off 30 gigs of free space into unpartitioned area off my laptop, then formatted the 70 gigs thats left in to ntfs slow, installed windows xp over that 70 gigs, then without installing anything else, pop in the ubuntu cd, and then format the 30 gigs to ext-3, then install ubuntu onto it. everything works fine, computer restarts, and it gets stuck on installing grub... i leave it on over nite, next morning, still installing grub... then i turn off my comp, and pop in the windows xp cd so i can use fixmbr to restore my comp, and bam, the windows xp disk no longer boots.. so then i have to put the ubuntu disk back in, select format, format my ENTIRE drive, then the instant it finishes formatting, before any files are being coppied, i have to pull the plug on my comp, only then will the xp disk boot..

tried this 4-5 times.. yea.. it doesnt like me very much

Are you sure the cd you are installing ubuntu off of isn't scratched or anything like that? What version is it? (Horay, Breezy?) Have you tried installing ubuntu only just to see if it's grub that's messing everything up? And if it still wont work, either try a different distro, or smash the laptop and take it back

Exactly! Making money of speculation. That's gotta be one of the most; if not the most parasitic "jobs" there is. It's too bad that people can't get paid at least in part by how much they contribute to the well being of society. Lawyers, politicians, and stock brokers would certainly be less abundant.

People make exactly what their value to society is, according to the market system we currently utilize. There are ways to Fudge with it a bit, but overall it tends to work (though maybe not in your opinion).

doctors and other professionals, like teachers are earning less than say, musicians because musicians are more valuable to society?? personally, i think doctors and teachers get peanuts compared to their value in society.

Musicians become rich because they are able to entertain millions, if the doctor had the ability to treat millions of people in a captialistic country, then he/she would make much more than the musician

Very few musicians become rich. VERY few. Those that do are generally deserving of that wealth. Generally speaking doctors make much more then your average musican. Teachers don't get paid enough for what they do, but again I would argue that they make about as much as a decent musican if not more.

Where I work we pay for live (good) bands during the winters. IIRC the average price paid is between $500 and $700 for one evening. Assume 4 group members in the band, that's $125-$175 each. Assuming they work every day all year that's $45000-$65000 a year, and they certainly don't work that often. So let's assume an average income of $40k-$50k; that's a far cry from riches, or the average doctors salary of $100k+.

Do the musicians you have perform live get to sell CDs as well?

They could theoretically sell CDs and a few actually do. However most perform music by others and don't sell many cds if any. Still, I'd argue that my total is a bit high to start with. That's a live performance every night at the low end.

Good luck finding available gigs for every night of the year. If you're not a household name, that'll involve travel - which'll increase your overhead.

On the other hand, getting out and travelling is a pretty good way to get more people exposed to your music. You can't be in demand if no one knows you exist.

I thought that was what the internet was for. Isn't one of the great benefits of bittorrent is that it allowed small bands to get exposure to large numbers of people? Surely people use bittorrent to download things besides linux distros

Yes, you can use P2P apps to get a wider sampling of an obscure band's music. However, that alone won't tell you that they exist in the first place, and it won't pique your interest.

I dunno; I'm not sure why it's loading files onto the server, as that just seems to be a waste of space. Computer B is just as well off sending a search request to computer A through google and then downloading a copy of hte file. And perhaps then usign google to copy it back.

I suppose there are some privacy concerns assuming google doesn't encrypt the files it uploads (which it really should). But it's a long way from being evil. Especially compared to recent happenings at yahoo. I don't know of anyone google has turned over to hte chinese censors...

From an article I read, the choice to have the files indexed on the google servers is an option you can choose if you want to be able to search through the files from another computer. If you don't want that to happen you just don't choose that option...
