The iMac goes first

-----------------------------------

The iMac will be the first Mac to go Intel. Externally identical to the old iMac, no features have been added, but it now sports an "Intel Core Duo" processor. Steve Jobs and an Intel rep are onstage demoing speed increases of roughly 3x over the G5.

The PowerBook follows. Now the "MacBook Pro" it's four to five times faster than the Powerbook G4, thinner, features an improved 15.4" display and integrated iSight camera.

Fascists. My iMac is already obsolete. Well, not really - I do have 1500mb of RAM. Although I have to say, I'd trust Apple with benchmarking about as far as I'd trust a homeless guy with my watch.

And 'MacBook'? Come on Apple, where's that creative department? That sounds like something my mom say.

All and all, pretty cool though.

I've heard in places that Jobs said something about "We're done with Power". Makes sense considering they're accelerating their Intel transition plans.

The other "MacBook" consideration is that Apple almost certainly plans to merge the iBook and PowerBook lines. For too long now it's been an artificial distinction.

I think the MacBook name is Apple saying 'Trust us, this is still a Mac and not just a PC.'

It'll be sweet to triple boot Windows, Linux and OSX on one of those. :)

This is not what people are hoping for. What they're hoping for is Windows and Mac OS X (and Linux possibly, though OS X already gives people a lot of the Unix-y goodness, so there's less demand for that) running at the same time.

How does that work?

I think I like PC laptops better than Apple's hardware though. Not that it'll really matter. I imagine release builds of OSX will be on them in no time...

iWeb is a lot like RapidWeaver, but it adds in a lot more features (as in automatic RSS and AJAX), no irritating progress dialogs and a lot more themes. Cool app!

I'm likeing the new iLife'06. Some major improvements here. Quality apps!

It's over my head, but I know Intel's been working on it for quite some time.

I imagine release builds of OSX will be on them in no time... I don't believe this will happen. Apple's gonna use intel's DRM technology to tie their OS to their own hardware.

Just like people will never be able to download software applications, movies or music off of the internet. Apple may say no, but hackers say yes. The hackers haven't been wrong yet.

I imagine a lot of people are going to be pissed off about the iMac though. The "old" iMac G5 is not even 3 months old.

That will likely largely depend on what happens to iMac G5 resale value. Typically Apple products have held their value well.

If you can nearly make your money back on eBay, then it's not that big an issue.
