Syntax highlight and file attachment issues

-----------------------------------

CompSci.ca is currently being hit by some bots, and that was really streatching out our server.

I would like to thank Dan for handling the issue, and lowering the effects to more acceptable levels, to stay out of trouble with our host. Though we had to turn off some functionality to lessen the hits:

syntax highlight -- processing power on serverside
attachments -- bandwidth

Everything will be returned to normal as soon as we get out of this mess.

Do you have a bots.txt file in your /v2/ directory? I believe that blocks most bots from visiting the site.

it is robots.txt and it has to be in your main dir not a sub one. Also it is more then having one but you have to have stuff in it. And yes we do, but not all bots aucatly read this and obay what it says.

Isn't the point of it that they do have to follow the robots file? Couldn't you... sue them for that? :?

Nope, sueing them is a legal nightmare at best. Especially since the robots file isn't actually enshrined in any kind of law... it's just a standard that someone thought up that has wide usage.

Ah, it sure would be. That really sucks for the site, I always thought google of all would follow the convention... Ah, well, good luck tricking the bots. :)

Greetings,

Sorry to bring this up again, but by the looks of it, the Attachments that are shown in the post details duplicate themselves. Perhaps you want to look into this. If you need any help, please ask. I am a phpBB Guru. :D

if we only actually used phpBB

if the duplicates are found in old threads, then we are aware of the issue. (Same goes for duplicate polls and other database messups). It's part of the history :P If something odd is found with recent uploads, please let us know.

Thx
