Longhorn is now known as "Vista". They've been working on it for at least 5 years now, and since most of the important stuff in it is being back-ported to Wndows XP, it's essentially going to be Windows XP SP3 with a new theme.

Longhorn is the upcoming new version of Windows, meant to replace XP.

Like just about every other Microsoft product, it has been delayed far after the period when it was supposed to have been released.

Nothing wrong with MS developing software. Every once in a while they put out a decent product, but when something is delayed for extended periods of time - it means that there are serious problems with the program.

Service Pack 3 would sound bad next to OSX 10.5 and Linux 2.6.lots

So it'll be Service Pack 720!

But we won't have to worry about longhorn if [url=http://www.compsci.ca/v2/viewtopic.php?t=10708]Microsoft drops support for Windows.

We're talking about Microsoft's marketing department, so I'm expecting something like Windows XP Service Pack eXtreme

Actually, at last count, Microsoft is planning on having at least 14 or 15 different versions of Windows Vista on the market since 32-bit and 64-bit versions will be packaged as separate products. And that doesn't include server-oriented versions or versions for tablets or handhelds.

Microsoft may be evil... but when it comes right down to it they provide the products that people rely upon. Were windows to suddenly cease to function the world would come to a screeching halt (for the most part). So despite how much you may dislike htem (El noobo), they are a nessary evil.

Plus... you really have to ask yourself... were they to offer you a job right now would you take it? I know I would; I may dislike ther business practices and some of their programs... but the money rocks.

Demoralizing as heck, though, since you know that if you're doing anything interesting it'll never see the light of day for fear of having it compete with their mediocre products.
