Why are you using the old-style single Gnome menu vs. the new three-way divided menus?

Author:  rizzix [ Thu Oct 13, 2005 6:51 pm ]
Post subject:

eh?

edit: ooh.. ah yea.. well the first time i tried out that new menu i thought it was a little too "wordy" (i don't like seeing too many alphabets up in my menu bar)

but i think i'll just try and get used to it... Wink (thx)

Wow, that looks sweet.... hmm I wish there was a theme for windows to get that kinda look o.O Smile (are there like no folders for linux? I dled this umm.... i forgot what its called, but it replaced the explorer to something like a linux distort bar and etc... and I couldn't add custom folders *sigh*, + it looked pretty ugly).

Author:  Mazer [ Wed Oct 19, 2005 7:55 pm ]
Post subject:

Of course there're folders for Linux, it's just that alot of people don't like to have them cluttering up their desktops.

Yeah, I've tried a few replacement shells for windows. They've always just been a bunch of trouble for me. You're better off just switching to Linux. Razz

Author:  wtd [ Wed Oct 19, 2005 8:22 pm ]

As mentioned, there are folders.

Ah, I meant on the desktop.
But anyhow, that skin looks good (ahhh want it -- but can't switch from windows...too much is already on here.......)

Ubuntu doesn't place anything on the Desktop by default. It's possible to put anything on the desktop, since it's treated as just another folder in your home directory.

Removable media does show up on the desktop.

I'd love to try out linux, but the whole dual boot thing scares me, so I've played around with live cd's. I need a second computer, but no way I can affford it.

He still can with a program like parition magic. But there's a chance something could go wrong while partitioning it. I know it's happend to me

it's a piece of cake... very safe... easy to do (hmm)... well depends on your experience i guess... but yea.. i've only installed linux as dual boot Wink (quite the opposite of you)

Do your research, back up stuff you can't afford to lose, and it's a cinch.

I have been considering it... I already have my hard drive partitioned, but I've heard from a number of sources that windows doesn't play nicely with linux. Is this just complete bull, or do I need to take active steps to protect them from each other?

Author:  rizzix [ Thu Oct 20, 2005 11:41 am ]
Post subject:

yea complete bull.. but.. only thing is... you won't see a linux "drive" in windows.

oh and since this is your first dual boot... ehm.. a tip: keep windows as the first partition... also try and not screw up your bootloader setup.. that could screw things up real bad (but not as bad as "hopelessly bad").. Oh and another thing (i don't know about ubuntu) but you might have to manually setup your bootloader to work with both your linux and windows.

oh and.. btw.. i use grub.

Author:  wtd [ Thu Oct 20, 2005 12:23 pm ]
Post subject:

Install Windows first. Windows doesn't play nice with other operating systems. When you install it, it will overwrite any other bootloaders that are already present. If you install Linux, then Windows, you will not be able to boot into Linux, making that install a waste of time.

Ubuntu does a fantastic job of automatically setting up grub.

Post subject:

You can see your Linux partition in Windows provided you have the driver installed (can't remember the link, try google). It works pretty well, the only problem I've had with it is not being able to share the partition over the network.

Hey wtd, what's that button next to the "Show Desktop" button in the lower left corner?

I've switched themes again. Guess what I'm going for?

This was actually quite difficult. There are surprisingly few red themes. I really wish I had a better red window boarder. There was one theme called "Automotive Red", I believe, but that was way too overbearing.
I got the background from deviantArt, with a few tweaks by myself.

It's the "Window Selector" applet. The Window list is fine, but I like to set it to only show windows open on the current desktop. The Window Selector shows me windows on all desktops.

Surprised Cervantes, is that Warcraft III I see on your desktop? Cedega? How does it run, performance-wise?

Not that I play it or anything, I'm just wondering if Cedega is really that far along. That'd be quite impressive.

It is indeed Warcraft III you see on my desktop. Performance-wise, it runs quite well. I don't notice any difference from when I played it on windows. The only thing is the sound/music does not work. Probably fixable, but I haven't tried, since I turn it off anyways. Furthermore, I remember having this very discussion with you a while ago, on IRC. Wink

Cedega does seem pretty wicked, but it does faulter at times. I could never get N working with cedega. Or wine, for that matter. It just wouldn't accept input from the keyboard when the game had started (though getting input for the menu screens was fine).

Correct, again. Although I wish I had a better icon for it; poor "Five or More", must feel so used.

And not only is it on the desktop, it's in the drawer at the top, and in Applications -> Games. Just so that, y'know, anyone who gets access to my computer will have a high degree of probability in finding themselves engrossed in a game of Go. Smile

In case you're interested, here's one version of the official CGoban icon: http://thegoban.com/cgoban.png

You can also find another (much better) one by looking inside cgoban.jar Smile It's pretty similar, only it uses a green background instead of transparent.

EDIT: Ah, what the heck. I got it for ya Smile http://thegoban.com/icon.png
