Alright people, cast your votes. If I say a game, any mods for that game fall under that game. So if you like Counter-Strike, vote Half-Life. Also, if you like Quake 2, vote Quake.

I know I left a lot out, so if you think of something else, post it.

Tribes, one not two tho. Tribes 2 killed alot of what was good with tribes one. Athougth Tribes is only good with some of the server mods like shfiter witch was gr8.

For real, though, I'd have to say Tribes was the most fun for multiplayer. Shame there aren't as many people playing now... and alot of the mod servers really take away from the game I think.

hrm.

anyone remember 'Rise of the Triad'? how 'bout 'Duke Nukem 3D'?

some of the older games were the most fun.

I didn't like the original doom too much, it's only redeeming feature was its non-block levels (unlike wolfenstein 3d or rott).

But from what I can tell, the first truly 3d game was Quake. I distinctly remember gibbing things and having guts bounce around.

The best would have to have been Half-Life. Argue all you want, but when a games price remains the same even after 6 years, it must be pretty good.

AVP2 and NOLF were fun, but I didn't like BF1942. it seemed too gamey.

vote: Half-Life

i saw doom3 on shelve today..

90$.. ouch... and requires 64 or higher video card....

half life was like 30 $.... and required a lot less..

but they also said doom3 would have so dam good graphics... best lioghting and shadoes... so lifelike..

and a really good comment from pc gamer.. that i forget now.;

meh.... idk about half life 2 tho..

wolfensteain 3d suckerd... graphics were way to blockish like someoen said...

No, I meant wolfenstein 3d.

Wolfenstein 3d, and ROTT were both built along the same lines. All levels were composed of bricks (like cubes) and you had to navigate around them. The enemies were 8 (or less) pictures (for rotation) and a few for death.

However, ROTT introduced the concept of height. you couldn't jump or duck, but you could climb stairs.

It wasn't anything amazing, but you could easily build a random map generator.

Doom and Duke Nukem 3D introduced actual 3D levels. You could have angular walls, large organic-ish structures, and a more 'realistic' level. However, in Doom, you were still constrained to 2 dimentions (I think).

Around this time, Quake was released. Quake was the first fully 3D game. You had 3D monsters, 3D Maps (not blocks) and moving doors. I think this was the building block of all games to come. Alot of the cheat codes (console commands) originated in Quake, and have not changed much since. (i.e. sv_gravity 400).

A good indicator of a games heritage is to look at the gibs. By playing Deus Ex, you can clearly see (after rocketing someone) that the game was based upon the unreal engine.

Also all of the Quake 3 'Mods' (retail games with the same engine) boot up the same way. I remember playing Quake 3 once, and finding MoHAA in the mods menu. ^_^;

I know, I'm a geek.

Rise of the Triad was the best Doom wannabe EVER. '95! U should read up on it if u never heard of it, maybe. It was a great game.

But UT is still #1 overall for me. Q3 couldnt touch it, Halo was close but not quite there. Ut's not relaxing at all, which is why its so fun.

About 7 years ago, I bought it online (from 3D Realms) for $60.

6 weeks later, the game was released for free in the x-mas edition of PC Gamer.

Thats how I remembered it.

And for those who don't know...

They also had some nice easter-eggs. i.e. diffrerent music on holidays, different pictures, and different pictures.

Also, the whole game wasn't meant to be taken seriously. One of the characters you could be had the name 'Ian Paul Freeley'. Boy, was that joke old.

Another hidden name? The 3rd boss. A metal garbage can with a dozen rocket launchers. He was the 'Nasty Metallic Enforcer' (The NME - get it?)

I still remember that game well. I've been trying to find the music from that game (not in MIDI format). Having fun still listening to that.

Wrote my first web page with some of that music in the background ^_^.

he was stephen hawkings in the wheelchair wasnt he? the last boss was a giant exploding head slash snake thing, who had larvae everywhere.

yep, ROTT had funny stuff alright. Shrooms mode (a power-down where it looks like ur trippin out), dog mode (where you turn into an invincible dog. the dog digitized from one of the producers actual pets. you got smaller, too!), god mode (you became 10 times bigger than normal and anything you saw instantly died). cant forget the ultrabat (same story for the bat as the dog).

I loved luring bad guys into those spinning blades.

Yep, my issue was from a friends pc gamer mag. even doom producers played this game a lot for a while.

Other games haev had funny stuff as well, though. I mean half-life had some good comic relief for the first bit of the game. New games just dont have as many easter eggs though, which is a totally good reason that ROTT is right up there in my mind, though the point of a general FPS is to kill stuff after all. And thats why UT gets my vote.

Author:  TheZsterBunny [ Sun Oct 31, 2004 2:29 pm ]
Post subject:

The second boss was the wheelchair dude. that was not stephen hawking, but one of the producers in an armchair.

Nowadays, games take years to produce (HL2, Doom3, DNF), but looking back on this one...

*a-hem* The game looks like it was produced with a 500$ budget in 3 weeks. and most of the budget was spent on beer. It was full of corny easter-eggs, poor graphics, and was loved by many.

*sigh* those were the days.

Latest? Halo 2. The graphics were great, and the physics were sweet, storyline blew (Halo's 1 was awesome though), but it's the multiplayer that made this shine, not only the team aspects and solid stradegy but the matching system. No longer was a match just a match...it was for honour, rank. Not to mention have about 6-8 friends that played was good. Calling up my buddy and my cousin and taking on team snipers was fun as hell.

Old school, definitely duke nukem 3D. Not only was it fun and expansive, but funny. I laughed my ass of at the "Balls of steel" pinball machine (but I was only like 10). And Quake (the first), as well, that game had me pissed off a lot, especially at the last level, I could never figure out how to kill that damn thing, until I finally just did it (by accident)

I found Halo quite entertaining and that it had a lot of replay value. Multiplayer was always fun. Some levels were repetitive but overall it was a brilliant game. Halo 2 had a disappointing ending but was still quite fun like the original.

Half-Life 2 was a fun game sometimes but boring others. I especially hated those damned antlions always popping out of nowhere when you step onto their beloved goddamn sand. They always got a revolver shot to the head for that one. I haven't really played the original Half-Life much despite owning it for a while now.

Quake was fun when I was younger but it got boring fast. It's the same damn thing over and over again!

Doom was pretty fun but I never really got into it. Doom 3 is pretty good at making you jump at some points.

Unreal tournament is a wonderful game to play when you have a group of friends over. Other than that it's boring.

Damn... my post got mutilated...

Anywho, I personally like Halo 2. It's got an awesome multiplayer setup that's great for anywhere from 2 - 16 people to play, a good balance of weapons, and some good maps. The fact that you can create your own game scenarios is a major benefit as well. I found that that option was much better handled the second time around than in Halo 1. The campaign was a bit disappointing to be honest, I just didn't think the story was quite up to the standards of Halo 1. Definitely the big thing that Halo 1 has going for it over Halo 2 is the fact that the Warthogs are damn near indestructible.

I was a fair fan of Ghost Recon. Someone here needs to make a Portal mod for the first Second Person shooter. Stand at a portal and shoot yourself in the face; over and over and over.

Cheers

I have to say that S.T.A.L.K.E.R. is my favorite fps, sure the engine might be a little dated but you easily get lost in the story.

I'm all about Counter Strike 1.6. I've played a lot of FPS games and some were fun and even memorable (like COD4) but none have that lasting appeal counter strike has for me. It's just so awesome.

I like Half-Life 2, TF2, Portal (if that counts), Halo PC, and CoD4.

Goldeneye. It may be the granddaddy whom has inspired and guided the development of so many other FPS's, but its still the best. It can whup all these new-fangled FPSs, complain about kids on its lawn, and drive really really slowly... all at once!
