i saw no noticible (over 30kb) dif when using rar or zip (i was dealing with a
40 MB of stuff.. and i compressed into both formats... and they both turned into 15.something...

so its not enuf to change... plus i dont like winrar...

i cant comment on other formats tho.. havn't tried them....

Did you try using different compression level? That is, use "best" instead of the default "normal?"

Besides, .rar beats .zip because mainstream is lamestream (it doesn't need to rhyme to be true).

Author:  the_short1 [ Thu Jul 15, 2004 8:23 pm ]
Post subject:

well.. i did both on same level...

Compress both at "best" and you'll see the results. Try ".tar.bz2", you'll see dude, It compresses like mad.

Also, you have to take into consideration that some files compress better than others. It's a fact. I've seen folder of 100+ jpegs compress by a factor of 10%, and then I've seen huge documents files compressed by about 40%, at the same compression level.

lol i've done a test on most of the popular good compressions and here's my conclusion:

7z for compressing binary and text files
.rar for compressing media (video pictures etc..)

nothing beats that.

i had a full version game (diferent kinds / types of files) i ziped it into both .rar and .zip format using same compression.. and their wasn't a 'big' diference..

i have not tried those other two formats (tar bz) maybe they do better... but meh... winzip is good enuf for me...

for some reason by raring a file twice (both at best) i managed to shave another 25% off sizewise

like making a zip file... then putting that zip file into another zip file?

well.... if thats the case.. hmm...

Author:  Amailer [ Sat Jul 17, 2004 4:22 pm ]
Post subject:

it doesn't work for Zip files i tried, only for RAR :shockL

Author:  the_short1 [ Sun Jul 18, 2004 9:27 pm ]
Post subject:

what u mean... not being able to put a zip file into a zip file? (cuz i have done that before... (to password protext something and to make files not visible)....

u just need to select more then one file to add to the archive... then it works..

or are u talkiogn about saving space by double archiving?

Author:  Amailer [ Sun Jul 18, 2004 9:30 pm ]
Post subject:

ya that's what im talking about.. if you rar a rar file the file size becomes a bit smaller, but not the same for zip files.

Author:  Raugrist [ Mon Jul 19, 2004 1:52 pm ]
Post subject:

That's because rar is better. Wink

Author:  the_short1 [ Mon Jul 19, 2004 5:00 pm ]
Post subject:

no.,.....

thats cuz zip files are already as compressed as they get...
(meaning the acuall .zip file is compressed..)..

like mp3s./.. they are already compressed pretty well... u dont gain much my ziping / raring them... rite?

so a rar file is not as cleanly made.. cuz it can be compressed.. Confused

notice a conversation about arhiving files has gone on for a week? sadening....

Benchmarking (real-world results)

---Binary-and-Text-files---
Uncompressed (size on disk): 21.9 Mb
WinRAR: 13.9 Mb
WinRAR (second time over): 13.8 Mb
7z: 11.1 Mb

---Media---
mp3: 3.92 Mb
WinRAR: 3.82 Mb
WinRAR (second time over): 3.83 Mb
7z: 3.83 Mb

NOTE: media is already in compressed format (mp3)... and hence the conclusion of this investigation is that WinRAR is great for compressing already compressed data. on the other hand its is best that you use 7z for compressing uncompressed data.

Post subject:

ahh.. but u did not try WINZIP (not using winrar to make the .zip files)_

and winzip 9.0 has a new compressesion level.... that compresses even better .. but thats new technology so some other ziip utilities may not work with it.... but its good for zipping stuff on ur comp cuz u have winzip 9 to unzip it..

not much gain on that mp3 eh....

7z tho.. exactly what is that??

and try winraring a file 3 times...

i wonder....

Once I tried to zip a 3+ GB file and it gained 40 MB. Shocked

Author:  rizzix [ Tue Jul 20, 2004 7:06 pm ]
Post subject:

yea zip sucks.. but it is good for daily use.. zip is designed for fast compression and fast decomression.. other formats focus mainly on slow but stronger compression and fast decompression

That's hilarious, templest.

Here's something:
I once unrarred 4 compressed CD images, then realised they were actually in .iso format and that somebody had set .iso's to be associated with winrar. An hour later, I was up four coasters.
