Too Much / Too Little?

Post subject:  Too Much / Too Little?

Everyone's heard the phrase "Too much of a good thing will kill you." or some less extreme varitation of it.

Here's a good question. will too little of a bad thing also kill you? Now before you fire your thrusters off and start to flame anyone, think for a sec; after getting chicken pox once, a kid builds up an immunity to it and never gets it again. People who live in harsh conditions for most of their lives (extreme heat/cold Eqypt VS Canada) get used to it (most ppls, anyways). Insects have acquired antibodies to resist all pesticides except (apparantly) for the infamous (and in North America, illegal) DDT.

These are all typically bad things that organic beings adapt to deal with. Of course, adapting too late, or being exposed to too much of it without proper immunization first can be bad.

And by the same note, too many antibiotics (basically synthed antibodies) or anything that is supposed to assist us and be good for us (this is much more true of anything made in labs than it is for things that are grown) can be deadly, lead to negative sideffects, and typically don't allow our immune system that chance to build up.

So what do you guys think? Trace ammounts of otherwise noxious/deadly materials introduced into people from a young age would lead them to be more powerful/invulnrable than normal humans? Or would it just kill them? Because think for a second, if it DID work, it could be a kind of "passive" genetic engineering; without the moralistic issues of cloning/DNA editing (though just as filled with it's own ethical questions)

So then, too much of a good thing may kill you, but would just the right amount of a bad thing (consistantly) make you live longer?

<EDIT: I just realised that this idea is very similar to nature/nuture arguments...in a twisted kind of way...weird, huh?>

i heard somewhere (prolly from my crazy grandmother) that the queen took small amounts of a poisen to make hermore resistant to assasination. it works for somethings, but not for everything.

take iodine, for example. salt packets say "ionized salt", cuz the gov't puts trace amounts of iodine in it so that we get the right amount we need for our thyroid to function properly. no iodine is not good at all, you're screwed. too much iodine, well, you just drank poisen. even a drop will kill you.

anywho, i don't see much of a debate here, unless someone brings up a specific chemical to introduce to ppl at a young age. because some things the body will develop immunity to, whereas other things, your body wont.

Woot, visible vaccinations, I have penny sized circle on my arm where I got my vaccination as a kid, as do hundreds of millions of people in china. Its how u tell the person comes from a poorer country.

Way to stick with the topic people. (Now I must go kill whoever brought up hockey)

Anyways, I don't know if I could ever think I had "too little" of a bad thing, after all it's bad so I probably wouldn't want any at all. You know what would be nice? Too little spam, I can't imagine that would kill me.
