I assume you are using some version of 3DS Max? And I assume you want to do UV mapping (because what other kind of texture mapping is actually worth talking aout?), so I would suggest you check of the tutorials on Arild Wiro's website. That guy is an incredible artist.

the UVW unwrapper is good in 3ds max... it's kinda tough to get used to at first... but use the texture id things that let you apply different texturing to different groups of polys (can't remember what they're called exactly, because it's been so long)

Could be your graphics card, I remember having some troubles with blender when I was using my old graphics card. Try posting a screenshot of your problem.
