Anime suggestions

I promised the little one that I'd try and find some links to good Anime.

Any suggestions? (I have no clue what she has seen so far, so any and all hints would be appreciated).

Don't assume that I'd know about "the common, everybody knows this" stuff, so feel free to start at the beginning. Wink

Cheersl

About how little is "the little one"? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Studio_Ghibli films might be a good place to start.

Thanks, Tony.

Say mild R, not X, little. She was showing interest in Attack of the Titans.

And ya, we've seen Ponyo and My Neighbour Totoro. Good movies, still, not really my thing though, for reasons unknown. Smile

Cheers

Do you mean Attack on Titan? Personally, I like it but it is on the violent side.

It's hard to recommend with out knowing your/her tastes and age range.

Regardless I would recommend the following in no particular order as some of the best:

  • Fullmetal Alchemist
  • Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood (Remake of Fullmetal Alchemist)
  • Attack on Titan (violent)
  • Sword Art Online
  • Sword Art Online II (sequel to Sword Art Online)
  • Avatar: The Last Airbender (this one seems very kiddy at first but it grew on me)
  • The Legend of Korra (sequel to Avatar: The Last Airbender)
  • Death Note (more serious then some of the others, but a great anime)
  • .hack//Sign
  • .hack//Legend of the Twilight
  • Cowboy Bebop (older anime but still good)
  • Trigun (older anime but still good)
  • Akira (a classic, older movie and a bit violent)
  • R.O.D. (OVA, a bit odd)
  • R.O.D the TV (sequel to R. O. D.)
  • Kiddy Grade (uncomfortable amount of fan service, a bit to much filler in the start, but not bad once it gets going, also an amazing sound track.)

If you like more esoteric stuff:

  • Neon Genesis Evangelion (This is considered mandatory by some anime fans, has some adult material as you get close to the end(mild R level))
  • Serial Experiments Lain (has some adult material but easy to miss (mild R level)).
  • Paprika (I don't like this, but some fans list it as one of the best anime movies, has adult material (R level)).
  • Pale Cocoon (short)
  • Voices of a Distant Star (short)
  • Mushishi (have not seen all of this but it was ok, but a bit slow)
  • Future Diary (odd combination of themes, sort of a love story with lots of murder and cell phones that tell the future. Has some mild adult content (mild R))

If you like very cheesy and a bit repetitive I would recommend the Dragon Ball series. Be warned that the first season of "Dragon Ball" (not Z or GT) is a bit odd in that it has a brief nudity and suggestive scenes. It's also odd in that it started as almost a parody/comedy and then started taking its self seriously. Similarly if you want an anime with a crazy amount of episodes that is a bit cheesy, has lots of filler and is mostly mediocre, then I would also recommend Naruto or Inuyasha.

If you want to cry for a few hours; Grave of the Fireflies.

I am not a big fan of the class room/high school/relationship drama type anime so I have omitted most form the above lists. If you like that kind of thing maybe Negima,
Chobits, Fruits Basket, Sailor Moon (my wife made me put this in this post), etc.

Thanks, Dan.

Yeah, Attack on Titan. And yeah, I was a little freaked out by the story line, but she seems to find it entertaining.

I'll show her the list, and get back with more specific interests. I'll likely remain clueless throughout the entire back and forth. Wink

Cheers

Removed stuff from this list I'm neutral on, and emphasized others in this manner: bold I would not suggest your daughter watching unless you're absolutely certain she'll be okay dealing with either a lot of blood/gore, adult themes (whether implied innuendo, murder/death, etc), or general psychotic behavior that may upset her. Those I've italicized I'd definitely recommend as a start in case you (and her, even) are unsure of her tastes.

NGE I think she'd be fine with, depending on how old she is. You may want to be watching this one with her though. Future Diary I absolutely would not recommend, unless you're absolutely sure she'd be able to handle a metric ton of psychotic murder.

I'd add Bleach, Fairy Tail and One PIece to this list, just to cover all of the bases. Each has something a bit different to offer, and all of them are pretty much aimed at kids around 10 years old or so, can't really go wrong with them.

Additionally, if your daughter is at all interested in sports, there are a variety of sports anime you can check out, though a lot of the more mainstream ones tend to end up pretty cheesy. The ones I'd recommend are:
  • Cross Game: Baseball related, highschool aged protagonists. 24 episodes, fantastic anime, no fanservice
  • Major: Another baseball one, 7 seasons, so it's a long haul, follows the main character from the time he's 8 years old until he's about 27 by the end of the final OVA. Another fantastic watch.
  • Baby Steps: Tennis this time, 1 season, likely to get more as more of the manga gets serialized.
  • Bamboo Blade: This one is kind of bland, but I'd imagine your daughter might enjoy it as it's largely about a female-dominant kendo club.

As a final word, you can always head over to http://www.myanimelist.net and use their search function to look though various genres, read reviews, and find something that's not been shown here. Beware, the world of anime is vast and deep, try not to get sucked in too hard Wink

You can watch Full Metal Alchemist brotherhood. I was so obsessed with it, I loved it so much that what to say. You will love it. One more anime series you can watch is that you can watch Soul eater. I loved both of these so much.
