Just answer the poll, this is for seeing how many people are interested in playing!

I would, if I had internet on my computer (I bought it secretly).
I always use my parents' computers for wifi.

I guess I'd play it considering I'd be the OP. I'm going to invite a ton of people. I am going to run it on our 15 year old computer which now runs Ubuntu. Meaning that I don't know how many people it can take. I've had it run with 5 people quite stable. I'll make it a survival world with the option to play Skywars 2.0, which I plan on making automatic, but I haven't played minecraft in a while.

^ That threads been inactive for months

@SlyCat sounds good, let me know when its up. Would this be an online or offline server?

Author:  Sly14Cat [ Tue Apr 09, 2013 3:50 pm ]
Post subject:  RE:Poll: Who is interested in playing a CompSci MC Server?

Probably offline. I know how annoying it can be to have to buy minecraft just to play with friends.

Why not? It's only like, $14 or so unless they jacked up the price. Even if you play casually over a long time you'll be getting your money's worth.

Holy cow, I bought it when it was like $8 or something in Alpha. It's just a moral issue. I understand pirating a game to try it, hell, don't we all do that sometimes when we're sceptical? But if you have no intentions on purchasing it yet you plan to continue playing? That's when you should really consider buying it. Unless of course you want them to stop developing the game because people are no longer purchasing it?
As for the server, I'm afraid vanilla lost it's touch for me a long long time ago. However, I still enjoy Complete The Monument (CTM) style maps (Vechs are the most balanced) and Ultra-Hardcore (UHC). Both add extra difficulty, strategy and unpredictability. I mean, if you're running through a cave what won't you expect after a while. Ooh, maybe there will be a 1 thick layer of stone above lava you might accidentally break or a hole you could walk into, but there's nothing unpredictable there because everything is done by the computer (Terrain-gen and AI) As with CTM maps the whole map is generally made by a person who can make traps and various different forms of surprises as well as terrain generally not possible by a generator. And with UHC you still have normal minecraft, just no auto-regen (Only regen from Golden Apples and Potions, which are harder to make) and you have the addition of other players who are also plotting against you.

I support UHC, I think that would be fun. CTM might also be fun, never tried it though.

If the server is going to be something that enables pirated players, it probably isn't something that can/should be discussed on compsci. Besides with offline you have absolutely no reliability that the person who logs in is the person they say they are. What's to stop to me from logging as Sly14Cat and becoming an admin? (unless you go through all the trouble of setting up your own account system, which would alleviate some of the problems)

Author:  Nathan4102 [ Tue Apr 09, 2013 6:45 pm ]
Post subject:  RE:Poll: Who is interested in playing a CompSci MC Server?

With essentials installed, we can all be assigned nicknames by the admin. Only the user himself and the admin would know our actual username. Sounds to me like that would fix the problem, let me know if I missed something.

Post subject:  RE:Poll: Who is interested in playing a CompSci MC Server?

What's to stop you from logging in as me, I can just install a mod that makes you need a password to get in. That's what. As for pirated clients, I played minecraft for many months legally by just downloading the .jar, dropping it into the bin folder and playing offline. Legal and easier than getting a pirated client. Then I decided that I wanted to buy it.

I won't be adding a donation system because I don't think it's right for me to charge people for a server for fancy usernames is right. I will be the only admin and moderator and I will not tolerate inappropriate conduct.

Sounds good to me. Have we decided between survival/UHC/CTM?

How in the world would you consider that legal? I'm sorry but that is one of the stupidest things I've heard. Just because you can abuse an exploit to play something for free doesn't mean that it's legal. For some programs I can disable my internet connection, enter a random key in a certain format and since it can't validate online it will activate for free. Does that mean it's legal? No.

Besides, there is a difference between playing locally and bypassing the security measures in place for online play. Offline games for the purpose of allowing unregistered users to play is wrong. The intended use of that is for LAN parties, cases where an internet connection isn't required to connect to peers. It's not a free pass to host 'cracked' servers.

CTM isn't good for more than 4 people, and even then they all need to play at the same time, so it's not 24/7.
UHC is difficult to get right in a 24/7 setting. I mean you could allow for respawn (Ruins the point of UHC), do a temp-ban on death situation, or do a reset every few days. It is best played in rounds of either Free-For-All or Teams

Yeah, I'm watching Etho's season 9 vids right now.

We could do teams of two with 10 or so people if Sly invites more people, and make the arena a little smaller, like 1000x1000 for a faster game.

E: What would the objective be though? Ender dragon? Or last man standing?

Post subject:  RE:Poll: Who is interested in playing a CompSci MC Server?

I was watching kurts series originally, but I decided to watch the first 4 of generiks afterwards and that was a good decision. If you have time I'd go and watch that team because they have a really good series going.
I like the idea of the ender dragon because it forces people towards an objective. It forces the nether interactions and maybe even some end interaction. However, I feel like it is best to tackle the dragon in teams of 3-4 rather than 2. Teams of 2 are great for simple last team standing situations though.

@jr5000pwp

The dumbest thing you've ever heard? How is it illegal, when you play the demo of Minecraft which is freely SUPPLIED BY MOJANG, you get the "Play Offline" choice after playing the demo at least once. Tell me where you see illegal. Also, you can get the .jar from MOJANG which is also freely SUPPLIED BY MOJANG. Might want to rethink the dumbest thing you've ever heard.

Mojang CLEARLY knows that this is going on and would implement a measure to stop this from being done in their own legitimate clients. If you want to play LAN, you can do it without playing offline.

I respect your opinion and your knowledge but you can clearly do it without the uncalled rudeness.

Not sure if it's been mentioned already but CompSci did have a minecraft server but I don't think it was updated past 1.8.1.

Yeah, that's long outdated. I think sly is hosting a 1.5.1 (or whatever the latest version is) server soon.

Post subject:  RE:Poll: Who is interested in playing a CompSci MC Server?

By the way guys I learned how to make a spawner spawn custom mobs wearing anything and holding anything you desire. I was thinking of making a central area with 4 warps (maps): Survival, Skywars 2.0, Archer Wars (An idea I've been meaning to implement for months) and Mob Arena

I've gotten very good with the scoreboard system. Willing to help ?

Sure, I know 0 java, so I can't do any of that plugin stuff, but I can build! Wink

E: Not sure about the others, but survival will be the only thing I play. I only really play for the challenge.

Post subject:  RE:Poll: Who is interested in playing a CompSci MC Server?

BTW survival will be ultra challenging. Hardcore 1-Day ban.

Author:  Nathan4102 [ Wed Apr 10, 2013 9:23 pm ]
Post subject:  RE:Poll: Who is interested in playing a CompSci MC Server?

Perfect. Smile You know how to make these plugins?

Author:  Sly14Cat [ Wed Apr 10, 2013 9:58 pm ]
Post subject:  RE:Poll: Who is interested in playing a CompSci MC Server?

No. But one day ban is basically doing /pardon @a at a certain time every day. Also I learned how to make custom mob spawners (ie Spawning with armor, weapons, effects etc.) for the arena and custom villagers that trade what you want for whatever you want. I just learned that you can stack swords.

Author:  Nathan4102 [ Wed Apr 10, 2013 10:05 pm ]
Post subject:  RE:Poll: Who is interested in playing a CompSci MC Server?

I think it would be worth getting a java programmer to make the plugins for the 1 day bans, I don't think its hard. Maybe ask the minecraft forums.

Author:  Sly14Cat [ Thu Apr 11, 2013 6:52 am ]
Post subject:  RE:Poll: Who is interested in playing a CompSci MC Server?

Why would I go through so much trouble to get a programmer and have him make a plug in when I can just go to the computer, click on the server console and type /pardon @a once a day.

Author:  Nathan4102 [ Thu Apr 11, 2013 9:01 am ]
Post subject:  RE:Poll: Who is interested in playing a CompSci MC Server?

That wouldn't work though, if you pardon everyone at 5:00 PM every day, what happens if someone does at 4:30 PM while another guy dies at 5:30 PM?

Like this, except we'd need one for 1.5.1.

Post subject:  RE:Poll: Who is interested in playing a CompSci MC Server?

I'm sure it'll work in 1.5.1. I used a mod that hasn't been updated in about a year in 1.4.7 and it was happy. I'm making a mob arena with custom mobs, genetically modified pigs, mobs holding items and an exchange system with villagers as well as a scoreboard system.
