The Rules

Author:  Dan [ Tue Jan 20, 2004 9:28 pm ]
Post subject:  The Rules

1. User sign ups and profile settings

-You may not sign up for a user action for sole use of posting spam or other inappropriate matters on the forum. Also you may not sign up for an account for sole use of pissing some one off.

-Usernames most not contain offensive language or insults to any person or organization. Also usernames that may be offensive or used to insult a pre existing are not allowed.

-If you are banned or have a rank set to lamer you may not sign up for a new user account to escape these punishments. If you wish to have these removed you must convince an admin to do so.

-You may only have one account at a time unless you have permission from an admin.

-You may not use a fake e-mail.

-You may use fake info in your profile (other then e-mail) but you can not put in offensive comments or text/links to be used for google bombing/PR or spam.

-You may not have offensive avatars or ones that are so big they interfere with the table size of the site.

-You may not have offensive signatures. You may have a picture in your signature but it can not interfere with the table sizes of the forum. Also any picture over 250 pixels high is not allowed.

2. Posts and Flaming

-You may not flame people on this site. This means no insults at all; every one is entitled to there own opinion and that dose not give you the right to call them degrading names.

-There is to be no posting of any inappropriate content on the site. A good way to tell if it is inappropriate is to think of whether or not you would get in trouble for viewing it or posting it at school, if you would don't post it! Although we respect freedom of speech, we also want the environment of this site to be friendly and helpful. Posting inappropriate content will lead to our site being banned in school boards which we really don't won't to happen.

-There is to be no posting of copyrighted or illegal material that would lead to lead action against the site. Only post content you have the copyright to or permission to use.

-There is to be no flaming in Private Messages (PMs) and the rules of posting on the forum apply to PMs as well.

-Attachments and programs may not break any of the posting rules as well as not contain any code that would potentially harm a user's computer or our web site.

-The edit function should not be used to remove your posts but only to correct mistakes or add new content. Editing old posts is looked down apone.

3. Spam

-There is to be no spamming in any section of this site.

-Almost any post that consists of one sentence is usually spam, think about the contents of your message if it this small and if it really contributes to the discussion.

-Any mass spamming is totally disallowed and will be met with all punishments and actions available to us. Including reporting you to your ISP.

4. Asking for Help

-asking for help about programming is encouraged but we would appreciate it if your questions are in the right section and that your posts subject specifically describes your problem.

-Questions and inquires posted on the site should be included with your attempt at the code or what you have so far so we can better help you.

-Do not demand that people help you; it is not like we are getting paid for this. We are spending our free time to help others with computer sciences questions and we have lives too so your question may not be answered in 5 minutes or even several days in some cases.

5. Bits and their rewards

-It is import to understand that the prizes you get from the bits shop at the site are really free and bits are worth nothing in real life. This means that we have no responsibility to do anything although we will likely try. We are also not responsible for the e-mail/host/forwarding being down or not working, we can not guarantee anything. Also we may remove or modify your e-mail/hosting/forwarding at any time with out notification or warning.

    -Bits are just for fun.

6. Signatures and Avatars (See User sign ups and profile settings for more info)

-Avatar pictures should not be so big that they effect the sites layout. Any that do will be removed with out warning.

-Sigantures or avatars can not contain code that would hurt the site, users or record any information about the users of this site.

-Avatar picture should not have inappropriate content that may be offensive. Any that do will be removed without warning.

-Signatures can have pictures and text but should not take up more space then the average size of your post. Any that do will be removed without warning.

Possible punishments for breaking the rules:

If you break a rule intentionally and openly defy them it will lead to you being banded. Smaller and more accidental offenses like spamming in one post or yelling at some one once will likely only resort in you being warned or lose bits.

-Mass spamming will get you instantly banned and reported to your ISP.

-Offensive content in your profile will get you a warning and your profile edited or removed by a mod.

-Flaming will get you a warning for first offenses and then punishments will go up from there, possibly leading to a banning.

-Being overly rude and asking for people to do your work for you will result in you getting a lamer rank, warnings, ending up in the hall of shame and possibly banned form the site.

-Having a fake e-mail may result in your account being closed, removed or banned at any time.

In addition to posts with spam or flaming may be remove with out notice or warning. Posts may also be moved with out warning if a mod deems them to be in the wrong topic.

It is up to the staff's discretion which punishments will be applied and when. Punishments may be different from what is listed above and maybe be applied at any time after the offense with out warning.

General Discussion vs. Off Topic

General Discussion is for posts about computers, technology and the web. Also General Discussion can have post relating to the site and any other import topics witch will interest most people on this site. Anything else should be in off topic. If you are unsure where your post belongs in General Discussion or not, put it in Off Topic. Any posts in General Discussion that do not fit will be moved to Off Topic with out warning or notice. So if your post suddenly disappears check Off Topic.

Necro Posting

Posting in old topics is generally frowned upon, unless the post is important, relevant or adds new content. If your post is important (for example, say you made a big improvement to an algorithm the original author was using), you may post in an otherwise dead topic. However, bringing up an old game from [Turing Source Code] to say, "Good job!" is necro posting, and you will be issues a warning. Whether a thread is considered dead or not largely depends on the forum. Posts in [Turing Help] have a very short lifespan, so even a useless post in a month-old thread could be necro posting. Realize that, for a lot of old topics, the original author is no longer an active user on the site, in which case (s)he will not get your message. If you had to go trolling through a page of threads or more to find the topic, it's a safe bet that you shouldn't be posting in it.

Terms of Use

The Terms of Use (ToU) must be agreed to and abided by at all times. Failure to compile with the ToU may lead to account removal or banning with out warning.

The terms of use can be found here: http://compsci.ca/ToU.html

Edit Dec 23, 2004: The spam section is now know as the Off Topic Section.

Edit June 24, 2004 Added sig rule that was not listed in this rule list but others.

Edit March 26, 2006 Cervantes added necroposting rule.

Edit Nov. 8, 2006 Added missing rules, this needed more updating...

Edit Feb. 22, 2008 Fixed spelling grammar, out of date terms and Terms of Use section.

to tell you the truth, i dont really think the ISP cares. they'd rather keep the customer and make $$$ off them. i tried reporting somebody to their ISP once, with some solid evidence, and they didnt even give me a reply back...

hmm....I totally agree with what Hacker Dan is saying....it is becoming a more serious issue with all the spammers/flamers/etc. And as for ISP...it is there duty to take care of their clients if they are abusing internet privlidges. Like..I think Rogers is pretty good for this. Some hacker got in my computer (before I had my firewall) and sent 5-10 thousand spam emails to clients...so my internet service got disconnected until I proved to them I hadnt done it, and put up a firewall. So I think if a spammers ISP is rogers....then we may be able to get through to them. Although newer security isnt that bad I guess...

i'm a member of the macosx.com community. we also had issues as such. the admins/mods did report to the isp of those individuals, it apparently worked. i think those individuals recieve a letter of some sort, not sure. but it does work.

hmm but reporting them on grounds of spamming might be a better solution and more effective.

good job on the New rules... The first post should stay on the MAIN PAGE! and i like the awarded bits for reading it....

and if it wasn;t for you wicked Admins and Mods this site would crumble soo fast...like the Leaning Tower of Pizza During the Biggest Earthquake

Also (suggestion) removing the LARGE number of useless accounts.... liek tons on there have only made 1 post is last year...~!!~...maybe have it so you get account closed if you have a post per day average of less then 0.01 or someting.....then we prob wont have 1000 users no more... but it might thin out thte User list of crappy accounts

And fact: out of 22 pages of User list: first 16 DONT HAVE A LOCATION SPECIFIED!..... odd Eh! like they scared of you admins comming after them and killing them in their Sleep... HEHEH 'Crazy Admin' and 'hittin compsci server with a bat'

maybe make a gif of that and have that as you avatar....!!!! that would ROCK

Max Andre, I believe bits are the virtual currency of this site. While not able to be converted to real money or buy physical objects (I think), they show your merit in some sense. Whether or not you just joined to ask one question, or to be a part of the community.
