Would any one be interested in a CompSci.ca Minecraft server?

If so what mods or custom Server would you like to see used?

Update: Server now online.

Update 2: Server update to 1.6.6 and online for testing

Update 2: Server update to 1.8.1 and online

I would like it, but I would also like to see something that isn't just spam crazy lol. If there is some way to section of building lol that would be amazing (I know it's not, but if anyone could do it, compsci could)

I never really got into a server, mostly because they were super unfriendly to any new members, or because it was impossible to build something without it being gone next time.

If we set up a server it would welcome all new members, epstialy compsci.ca members. I am just starting to look into minecraft server mods and custom servers so i am unsure if there is anything that would partition it in such a way or if that would be desired.

If any one knows of some good mods or custom servers to pervent griefing let us know.

Bukkit - Plugins

Basically it's a wrapper, and very very extensive wrapper that's reverse engineered nearly all of the java server.

I haven't played since before the wolves, but the standard plugins back then was:
WorldEdit (ingame cuboid editing)
VoxelSniper (Long range editing)
Essentials (Bulky everyday stuff)
One of the teleporter plugins. Stargates?
I think worldedit protects, in cuboid areas, there were a few others if not.

Also, you might want to consider pre-generating a map of significaint size, as generating live seriously drags without enough CPU power.

Post subject:  RE:CompSci.ca Minecraft Server

I mean you don't have to partition alot of space to each person, I'm not talking continents, but enough that if you wanted to build something cool you can without worry. Also zren mentioned teleport mods? Perhaps have the main area spawn into a room where you can choose to go to the common grounds, or several themed areas or something, and one teleporter leads to the sectioned off areas. That way if people want the areas they can, and if they don't they can just ignore it.

Right now i am testing out the Residence plugin for bukkit which lets players create there own residences where they set the rules (tnt, dvd, can any one go in that area, who can build, etc).

I've used world edit and MCMMO and I find they are both good mods, I used World Edit for an adventure map I am working on and MCMMO for everything else

MCMMO adds skills as well as spawn points, teams, team teleports, and some other neat stuff

Also I have a friend who is working on a very extensive RPG mod, I'll let you know more about that when he lets me know more

Star gates or equivalent is a must

ace's to the /give command is great

Make it a build/creative world type thing, giving certain users access to using some kind of world protection thing. That way people can protect their own stuff easily if they have the protection access.

An update on the server:

I have a bukkit based server up and running with the following plugins so far:

Residence: Allows players to own parts of a world and set rules on it (pvp, who can build, tnt, will mobs spawn, etc)

WormholeXTreme + WormholeXTremeWorlds: Stargates, teleportation and multi world support.

Plus a bunch of admin realted plugins (Permissions, AdminCmd, etc)

Currently i am working on getting some nice maps to use. Thanks to the WormholeXTremeWorlds plugin we can support any number of maps with differnt sets of rules between them.

I had planed to open it up to every one this weekend but there is a minecraft update coming out this week which means the server will have to be upgraded.

In the mean time i would like to know if you guys want a leveling/skills plugin in and if so which one. Also if you want some worlds with support for a creative mode (e.g. where every one has access to somthing like WorldEdit). Also should player inventories carry over between worlds?

Post subject:  RE:CompSci.ca Minecraft Server

The server is now open to the public:

Hostname: cs1.ca

It will using the residence plugin to protect areas. Differnt areas will have diffrent rules based on the flags set by that areas owner.

See "/res ?", "/res select ?", and "/res create ?" for help on creating a residence. The basics are:

First select an area by using:

/res select x y z

where x, y and z are the offset form you current location for the area you want to define. You can also use the wooden axe to select an area by left clicking one point and right clicking another to form a rectenage.

Next use:

/res select vert

to make the select go from bedrock to the sky (if thats what you want).

To create the residence do:

/res create myresname

After you have created your residence you may set the rules for the area using "/res set", or "/res pset" see "/res set ?" or "/res pset ?" for detials and possible flags. You can set pvp areas if you like but by default the world is not pvp enabled.

It is also using the Wormhole X-Treme plugin for cross world travel. To use, find a stargate and right click on the sign on the DHD intill the world you wish to travel to is select, next pull the lever or push the button to open the gate. Set into the gate to warp to the new world.

Each world so far has a diffrent map to play with. I will be adding more in the future and on request. FlatLand and WaterWorld will be the creative maps but this is not yet enabled. CSCity is the main map and is just a noramly random generated map but with a city in the ceneter. Note that the area around CSCity is protected from building so you will have to go out some way to build somthing on this map (about 50-100 blocks length from the city wall).

Currently items do not cross over between worlds (you have a new inventory for each world). I am still debating weather to change this or not (leave some feedback).

There are also transporters on some of the maps that work the same way the stargates do but only travel in that world. I will be adding more when there are more places built with in each map to transport too.

You can view live maps of the worlds on the server here: http://maps.cs1.ca Use the arrow on the right to bring up the menu and select and map and viewing mode. You can also zoom to a player by clicking there name. By typing in the chatbox you can talk to the players currently online.

I can set custom names/alias for players if they wish. Just post or PM me your login and the name you want.

This is the first time testing the server out publicly so please do not try to break things too badly and let me know if you run into any odd issues. I will possibely be making a site for the server if it is popualr with some guides on how to do everything.

Please note that the server will be updated some time next week and will be down for that period. Also i am not sure how the update will effect what is on there when it happens.

I am not sure why you are getting a bad login error. Are you using a pirated copy? Is your copy up to date (1.5_01)?

From what i have googled about the error it seems to be an issue with you logging into the minecraft.net account server.

It's free to play if you have a legal copy of the game. Even if i did want to encourage pirating minecraft, running the server in offline mode makes it hard to ban peoleop and would mean no custom skins.

IP based bans are a pain to manage. It is easy for griefers with a dynamic IP to change there IP and you are limited in what you can do unless you ban there hole ISP or area. Also there are VPNs and open proxies to deal with. With account based bans they have to shell out another $20 for each ban (or at least use some one elses account).

This is not some big facless company making minecraft but an independent devloper and orignaily one man. In this case you are directly stealing from the artist and coder unlikey with many games where you are just making the producer make sighitly less. Honestly i could care less if you pirate or not but i am not going to go out of my way to enable it.

As nick pointed out, in this case you are paying for a preorder of the full game and as a bounse you get full beta access. The idea is the preorders fund the devlopment of the full game, as this is an independent devloper. So by not buying a copy you are acutactly hurting the abiblity for them to fix thoes issues. Also this stance is incredibly hypocritical consdiering you find the game good enough to play on a F2P server and don't apply the same logic to other software (Windows 7 still has bugs, as does almost all software).

Post subject:  RE:CompSci.ca Minecraft Server (now online at CS1.ca)

It looks like bukkit build 819 will be fixing the cross world teleporting, including many of the issues i have been having with the server. Hopfully that build will be recommended soon.

Edit: The server is up right now with 819 for some testing. However it is still buggy, when you first login you maybe spawned in a random location in the CSCity world, same thing may happen when you die. Beds are a bit random, some times you will respawn at them, some times underthem in the ground, and some times at a random location in the CSCity world. The inventory system is also a bit messed up, per world inventories has stoped working so all worlds share the same inevntory again. Nether portals are also a bit random, use at your own risk. The are still some chunking issues, so if you see a masive hole in the ground type "/chunkme" to have the server resend you the chunk data.

If you find any other issues let me know.

I've been playing on the server for over a month now, and I'm really enjoying it. My friend and I have a large underwater base and it's continuously increasing in size.

It's annoying at times as it crashes for days at time, like last night, which might have been caused by 4 of us being on. Currently, the server is off/crashed.

But other than that, the community is great on the server. My real life friends are building a small village outside of Mirghawk(sp?)'s castle, and we're in construction of a Grand Central Station near there. The subway will encompass Thegreatradio's builds soon enough and we may increase our tunnel structure to reach other builds as well.

Warps would be nice or teleporting to your base. The gate system is very confusing.

Anyway, love the server! Can't wait to get back on when it gets reset Smile

It crashed, but i will use this as an operturnity to update the server.

Part of the problem is that I simply don't have the time to maintain the minecraft server. The server software it's self tends to have memory leaks and eventualy crash (or at least one of the plugins being used does). Also i have been unable to keep up with the many updates to bukkit and the plugins.

If some one has the time and knowagle i could give them access to the server if they want to try and keeping it up.

I don't have a ton of experience with servers, however me and monkeyguy5000 did run our own bukkit server on the school computers (didn't work outside of school, so we switched to a vpn, which made the speed ridiculously slow).

I find enough free time to be on the server almost daily, so I have the free time (and desire) to manage the server.

Also which plug-in is it that is crashing? If it is a non-mandatory one, then we should just scrap it. (or do you not know lol). We had tons of stuff before, but to be honest the only essential one is the res plugin, we don't need extra worlds or stargates(although they are nice).

Post subject:  Re: CompSci.ca Minecraft Server (now online at CS1.ca, updated to 1.6.6)

So as of yesterday, Mirhagk (dude, your name is hard to spell) and I are pretty much given the task of revamping CS City and having the honour of building the Grand Central Station within it's walls! I probably was being cocky when I said that I'd love to do it, but since I was allowed to, challenge accepted.
Now, I like sharing what I'm doing or planning what I'm doing, because I'm not really a closed book, plus I like to plan what I'm going to do, so, here's my plan:

Project: Revamping of CS City
Purpose: To revitalize the city, make it a center for transportation, and more appealing to new members of the community
Goal: To make Dan cry happy tears

Phase 1: Destruction
i. Destruction of non-essential buildings. This does not include stargate, gate house, jail house or protected areas (I'm unable to do anything in patch for some reason?)
ii. Flattening of land
iii. Slimming of walls to allow of additional space within the city and to make the walls appear more realistic
iv. Destruction of random and unneeded towers. Four corners and ones around the city gates are realistic and vital.
Phase 2: Preparation and Essential Builds
i. Landscaping certain areas
ii. Construction of the city keep (aka. the center of the castle city). Dan, this is your home and sanctuary from the CompSci forums.
iii. Construction of the Grand Central Station. This will be the source of every subway line world-wide
iv. Construction of main roads
v. Construction of market plaza in front of the station
vi. Revitalization of the city walls. Just making it look nicer, such as the north gate and possibly a walk underneath the top, for archers.

Phase 3: City Functions and Attractions
i. Construction of crafting building
ii. Construction of fair trading building
iii. Construction of city park
iv. Construction of inn
v. Construction of greenhouses
vi. Construction of museum
vii. Construction of church
viii. Construction of storage and maintenance facility
ix. Construction of pub(s)
x. Destruction of jail
xi. Construction of the dungeon of the keep. The keep is basically Dan's home and somewhat a tourist attraction. Anyone who defies him, aka. the rules, is put into the dungeon! Torture time, gentlemen.

Phase 4. Filling Empty Space
i. Construction of spare housing (There may not be space, so we may put a suburb outside of the city walls)
ii. Planting of trees and flowers
iii. Any further touches that are necessary, such as lamp posts, fountains, incinerators, etc.
iv. Any good suggestions that the city should contain
v. Clearly and effectively placed signs that make it easier to navigate the city

Phase 5. Future and Ideas
(bold is a definite)
i. The subway will reach every known build
ii. Revamping of pathways to make them look nicer and adding lamp posts
iii. Secret passages
iv. Underground temple perhaps?
v. A Hollywood-style sign on the mountain saying "CompSci"
vi. A garden outside the wall with a Canadian flag in the middle
vii. A port outside the city. Ship builders can come here and build us some lovely ships
viii. A moat
ix. I will get a life Wink

There you have it! So lot's of big plans, but in the end, the finished product will be stunning. Hopefully we find a way to get light stone too Shifty

Okay, sweet Very Happy

I've been thinking a lot about the pubs lately, and my idea was to make an artificial lake (or just use the one to the east) and make an underground club/bar sort of deal, with glass towards the lake. Another bar, I was thinking, would be like the Blue Moon Inn in Varrock (only you will know what that is), so like a bar with a few rooms above it, and keep the other inn on the other side of town.

As for the port, I was thinking north of the city would be a perfect location, and that a design similar to Port Sarim would be interesting. Of course, maybe expanding on that with making it surrounded by a housing suburb eventually. Might be interesting to add additional buildings as well, like a chapel or something.

Also, if anyone is wondering, the designs are from a variety of sources, such as Pwegosever, The Yogcast (the Shadow of Israphel series in particular), Runescape, Chaos Server (they have a VERY well made smithery) and just general things that my mind have created Mr. Green Should be beautiful

Edit: Also heck yes with the glowstone comment! So much better than torches, regardless of it's rarity

Anyhow, another idea I was think of for a pub is like Cheers. Underneath another building.

I think this would be a great idea. We can make mini apartment complex above the bar. Another idea for a pub is one of those basement pubs, which is the same thing, but a floor lower, I guess.

So, for those of you who've seen it, the Grand Central Station is going decently. Haven't had too much time to work on it, but works been getting done. So far, the front walkway is done, using stone slabs, blue lining can be seen on the pillars and the trim of the foundation. The entrance has been confusing me, as I thought arches might be nice, but if you've seen it, it hasn't turned out very well. I think there should be a middle entrance and two lesser entrances in the front, but not sure what would make that look nice (ideas needed!). The inside has a temporary sandstone floor, which will stay, but have another block mixed in there in a nice fashion. There is two viewing areas to look into to see the tracks underneath. A fountain is in the center.

Although it is much bigger than I predicted, the good thing is that it's looking nice already. I'll need to expand outward, and probably temporarily knock down a section of the wall defenses Shocked The good thing is though, the stargate can be seated in a spacious area on the second floor, where you can also peer down. We could also put the teleporters up there as well, so it's a universal transportation building. There's going to be grand staircases up and down. The underground area will feature the various tracks with colour coding for each route. There's 4 routes that I know of that we need to build (can be expanded in the future): CS City, TheGreatRadio, Lysa, and CS Town. I'm working right now to dig out a section to start construction of that.

I'm looking for ideas, especially for the entrances. All ideas and constructive criticism are really appreciated because it helps me make better decisions than, for example, doing trial and error with smooth stone or playing with fences ( Shocked ). Comment on things, give ideas to improve, or even direct us to a Youtube video that has an interesting building idea that we could attempt to incorporate. Anything! Very Happy Also, anybody who'd like to tell us where their build is to incorporate the subway into, let us know (or you can always ask Dan to set up a public gate to your build as well)

Mirhagk and I are also willing to buy (or take donations for) gold and iron in exchange for lapis, since it's our biggest resource. Our exchange rates are 2 lapis for an iron bar and 5 lapis for a gold. These are used in materials to help build the tracks for the subway system. Hopefully, eventually, we'll be able to have two lanes for every route.

I added a few NPCs in the city which will sell construction materials, heal players and repair items. The currency they use is "Crops" (item id 59), you can gain Crops by selling items to the NPC in the city. They buy things like gold bars, iron bars, dimonds, flowers, mushrooms, slimeballs, etc. Use the command "/trader list buy" after you right click on the trader NPC to see a full list.

Note, i picked Crops as the currency simply becues they are not possible to get durning normal game play.

Oh sweet sweetness.
Thanks, I'll try it out.
Any way to find out the trade rate or will it list it in-game?

Also, my Port Royal project has expanded from a dock with an inn to a small town (and growing). Anyone can add buildings to it, just keep with the general theme (you can most certainly add personal touches to it) and no griefing. There are now a few inns there, and I'm thinking of adding a Port Royal resources building, in which you can add to and take from only if it is put towards the town.

Not sure of the coordinates off-hand, however there is a teleport to it. For the gate there is a button on the right wall that will lower the fences.

Cheers

CS Server News
August 20th

Bringing you the News, eventually

TECHNICAL
? /afk now works
? NPC plug-in
? Dan updated plug-ins last night
? Now have access to several new things such as /loc [player] (locates another player) and /kill (suicide pill)
? Rhetorical to most, but we are at 1.7.2, regardless of the thread title
? PLEASE: Let Dan know of any glitches that occur due to plug-ins or unnatural phenomenon

COMMUNITY
? Port Royal is booming like crazy and is in great shape!
? Grand Central Station is coming along slowly. Expect the completion of the underground in the next two days
? We now have DesertTP (nothing useful really...) and the ForestTP
? There is a new building across from the ForestTP teleporter. Feel free to come here to get some free items, varying in usefulness. Donate if you'd like or ask me to come take items off your hands. There will be a storage space underneath eventually for more item storage. Beds and crafting room are free to use.
? In an attempt to one-up Dan, TerranceN has made a Zelda-theme song door. Follow the north-westerly path of the ForestTP to check it out
? The server is now hosting a good community of around 10 active people. One member commented how great it is to work with everyone
? Dan is now more godly and ghostly than ever now that he can monitor the game without playing
? Sighting of Herobrine are widely reported, so hide yo' picks, and hide yo' diamonds, cause he creepin' everything out there
? There is a wild ghast, with a skeleton rider, in the overworld. Sadly to say, this is not a joke. Dan and Monkey have failed in their attempts to kill the beast, but have at least prevented it from reaching the city
? Traders have set up shop in CS City. Come on down to trade for useful items, healing, and item repair
? Port Royal! Expect traders in your town soon, as businesses are eyeing you!
? Due to complaints about the unfortunate exit from the Nether, Monkey soon shall build a protected area around it and a walkway to the CS Town teleporter (TPHut)
? "There be strange things happenin' in the desert," said a random doomsayer. "I swear them government folk are up to somethin' no good!"
? Dan soon issued a statement that the man didn't know what he was talking about, then disappeared into the sand

TIPS AND TRICKS
? The best way to make money is to have a sugar cane farm. These are very easy to make, just build a water stream, and put the sugar cane around it
? A great location for sand is Dune. Take the stargate there and dig to your heart's content
? Due to Dune's sandiness, one can easily setup an animal mob trap. These require the player to be 25 blocks away and miles of grassless land from specific plots of grass. The animals spawn immediately and thanks to the intention of the trap, fall to their demise
? A good way to make a TV is to take wool and put it into the wall. 2x1, 2x2 and 4x2 are good sizes for smaller and medium-sized TVs
? Fireplaces require a 3x3x6 area to be fire-proof blocks, or it will burn down your awesome house

!EPIC EVENT!
So I had the idea to go hunting for a skeleton spawner and then make a public mob tra- ... pfft, to heck with that!
Due to an ingenious idea brought to us by Thegreatradio himself, we are going to be having a large community event! This will include:
? Construction of a defensive structure as a community in a distant area
? Defending of this structure by tons of mobs, some of which are unsual to us, such as a creeper on a spider (what the...?)
? Recording of deaths
? And when all is said and done... Construction of a huge war grave. A grave for every death!
So grab your shovel, and lend me your axe, as we construct this defensive fortification and then kick some major butt!
Details to come Very Happy [/u]

We should set a place and time for the event. The weekend would be best for me but i would like to hear when every one can be on so we can have it for the largest amount of players as possible.

Also i have plans for a more long term event that will be triggered by some action in game (which is not yet setup).

Thank you first of all for helping me expand my humble town (Port Royal) so rapidly. I'm even thinking of tearing down one of the walls to expand it further whence the small remaining plots of land are consumed. Maybe a Town Hall?

Second I am stoked for the epic event, time to add some bloodshed to such an awesome game. I've started a fortress not too far from the ForestTP (follow the road to get there) built into the mountainside. So far it consists of a tower exterior and a hall dug into the cliffside to be the main entrance. I have plans for that large empty hall when you walk in, however feel free to further expand the fortress and prepare it for battle with what traps, dispensers and other creative war machines you see fit.

If you have any further questions you can ask me here, or in game as I am on often (typically evenings).

Cheers
The Great Radio

CS Event
Infomation

After recent need to change locations, we have found a nice valley far from civilization. As our doom is written in the destiny of this valley, it has taken on the name Death Valley. Everyone from across the server is welcome to come and participate as we build up a town, keep, and defensive fortifications. Not only that, but there's caves to explore as well.

Time and date are currently being discussed

Public Gate: DeathValleyTP
We'll need Dan or Mirhagk to set this up for us. The co-ordinates of the already built gate are +111, -933, 70

For those participating:
? Please bring any items you are willing to donate to the construction
? Bring items for you to use. It is generally safe, unless you're out in the night or exploring caves
? This is a community project, so work together. You'll be fighting along side your fellow builder soon enough
? When building, assume the worst. There will be ghasts and creepers, so consider that
? Do not build something that you wouldn't want in your way. For example: don't build a checkered cactus trap unless you have a means to get on the other side
? Make sure your builds still allow for easy access and space enough for running through. You do not want to get lost running through the town to a safer building or stuck then die
? Consider having multiple levels of defences in case of failure

Post subject:  RE:CompSci.ca Minecraft Server (now online at CS1.ca, updated to 1.6.6)

I set up the DeathValleyTP and the residence permissions for the area. I decided to make DeathValley a PVP area and srounded it by fences and warning signs so no one can wonder in by accident. The two buildings (the one with the beds and the wood one with the chests) area safes houses where PVP is disabled and creeper protection is in place (the TP room is also safe).

Everyone can build in DeathValley, however the safe houses are limited to the trusted group only (if you need to build in them let me know and i can give you access). The TP room is off limited for building to every one but Monkeyguy, tho there should not be much need to build in it, it is a small area.

Try to keep the building in the fenced area (there should be enough room).

As for a possible date/time i recomened September 10th at 8pm EST. If any one can not make this let me know and we can make adjustments.

Post subject:  RE:CompSci.ca Minecraft Server (now online at CS1.ca, updated to 1.6.6)

I support this day as well.

As for building updates:
? Port Entrance is more or less complete. We can add a storage room in the west wall platform. I added staircases so everything is easily accessible.
? The stone shack has been revamped and is 3 blocks high inside and has a ramp down to defend the entrance. Chests have been moved into the storage facility
? There is now a walkway done up to only the storage facility
? Keep is a work in progress by TerranceN. I'd help with it, but I have no idea what he's doing with it
? Walls are a work in progress
? There are also some basic fail safe mechanisms I added to corridors in the Port Entrance. These are gravel held up by forces. If a creeper or ghast blows a hole inside a building and allows other mobs in or even if spiders overtake a specific area, run back, hit the torches, and it should be safe.
? There is now a statue of Dan, half complete. Feel tree to finish it off if you'd like.
? Cobblestone is running out fast. I know Thegreatradio has some and it's been coming over, and there's also about 4.5 double chest worth at the Newbie Institution (ForestTP). It's usually a junk item, so if you have it, bring it. VERY useful for builders and for you as space saving!

Ideas:
? Bar
? Town hall
? Inn
? Adding a diamond sword to the statue of Dan (using light blue wool to save diamonds)
? Other types of fortification
? 11 radius towers at each corner of the fence line with the central block being the corner of the fence. Check out one of the towers I built for an example of 11 radius set up. These leave spaces for things like chests without being too complicated to move around in. Maybe each one should be 4-6 stories high, just so it can allow us to attack ghasts.
? More fail safe mechanisms, wherever they fit. Try your best to make it look nice
? Maybe getting the gate/bridge mod on the server? Might be a good thing to have for builds in general and it's an easy fail safe mechanic for us to work with

Incorrect! With Notch's clarification, ALL features of 1.8 can exist, in newly generated chunks in old worlds. Understand though... the terrain changes may cause new chunks to generate in RADICALLY different ways then your current generated land. A flat plains beside new chunks may run into a 128 tall wall of stone from a mountain biome, making for a hideous sight. But everything from 1.8, should work in prior maps... for now.

The "terrain changes may cause new chunks to generate in RADICALLY different ways then your current generated land" part is what may take time to fix. Unless no one cares about some randomness around the border of the old terrain and the new. Was never worried about losing anything, just having to spend some time in a map editor smoothing it out.

Yeah it's kinda awkward about what we should do. Possibly we could uncover a lot of land around it, and then export the CSCity world as a different world, not being the main one. We can then have a 1.8 version map that's the main one or something.

So 1.8 is awesome. I haven't seen endermen, but I think doing that battle thing, but with them included would be awesome, since they can move apart the structure, allowing creepers to see things, and blow huge holes for other mobs to get through.

I think notch should do a PvP version (or someone make a mod), but like L4D style where one side is mobs, the other side is normal characters. Would be awesome I think.

The server should now be back online and updated to 1.8.1.

maps.cs1.ca is also upgraded and online.

A new world, the Badlands, has been added and can be accessed via any stargate.

/xp will now show you your level and experience.

Added some new plugins so boats will not break into small parts and pumpkin helmets will allow you to breathe underwater longer.

The chat is now linked up with the IRC channel #cs1.ca on afternet.org so you can chat with players via IRC outside of the game.

Things are still a bit buggy as i had to rewrite some of the plugins manualy to get them to run on 1.8. Let me know if you hit any big bugs.

Post subject:  RE:CompSci.ca Minecraft Server (now online at CS1.ca, updated to 1.8.1)

After seeing the new spawn world and exploring it, a lot of ideas popped into my mind.

Currently, we have a decent world right now, which has its pros and cons, like anything. Some great things I find that Dan has tried to incorporate is the greatness of the server, when it comes to amazing buildings and projects the server has produced. These include: Leo's Port Royal Station, The Newbie Institution, and the outdoor fire pit. Another thing is the use of tutorials and the like showing how to utilize features such as teleporters and the residence mod.

However, it's rather intimating. I find that the use of tall iron walls and flooring doesn't represent the adventures that await a newcomer. A world pull of hills of dirt and that large mountain is something that calls you, much like when we run around on the server. I also think that we can expand the showcasing of greatness and better provide information to newcomers.

My idea is to start a world normally with it's sprawling landscape. From there, we can have the user start in the port entrance of Death Valley. This would be edited to remove the teleporter, but would start the player off in an unknown land, which welcomes them and gives them a basic introduction. The player would then explore, but have known to them that the city is up ahead. The city itself would contain different aspects of the server. Showcased in this city are:
- Port Royal Fountains
- Terrance's Mountain-side base
- Central Station (can be finished here with Creative Mode)
- Port Royal Docks
- Port Royal Station
- Port Royal Store Room
- Greenhouse (similar to the one from Port Royal
- Market plaza in the centre
- Original CS City buildings (for history)
- The Newbie Institution
- and other selected buildings
Just taking what we already have and building newer buildings to explain things or offer a city-like feel can be built easily. A warehouse can be built to show the resident mod as well.

In the end, however, the user must enter the city catacombs and take the challenge with the knowledge they've learnt from the city.

Just a collaboration of what I was thinking of.

Emergency on the Server:

Hacked and being spammed/griefed

Log:

At 1:45 PM EST, the Creative World was TNT bombed by someone. No one was in Creative except me and I'm pretty sure it must have been a hack. I was placing stone slabs, then got a lag spike. So I left and rejoin, only to see the Student Centre exploding into exsistense. A few seconds later, I found out it was an actual explosion.

The people on at the time were:
Brane666
deathbergade
timsan321

These two logged in shortly after:
hugolinnea12
rory97

Hugo stayed
Timsan started randomly building and pretty much littering the world. He also griefed a bit of the remains. Hugo participates

TNT is off on the world

Tim started speaking a Scandinavian language and Hugo might speak it well.

Death left around 2:10

2:20: Hugo glitched out and just spams up the server
Tim accuses Death
Jackjack1217
leithal7
doggyroc
thesnowyowl
All join the game and leave. One has previous bans. Two have alternative accounts.
Only Jack stays

2:25 Hugo spams for a ban

2:31 Hugo (in Tutorial) kills Tim (in Creative) with his fists

2:33 Realize Tutorial Gate has glitched out. Won't allow you to activate it

2:36 Hugo bypasses the gate glitch

2:42 Kill Hugo. He starts greifing.

2:49 Tim and Hugo start spamming. Jack spams a bit

All 3 left shortly after

After looking at the logs it is clear that deathbergade, hugolinnea12 and timsan321 where the griefers. It looks like that had hacked clients.

The good news is thanks to our rollback system the damage was fixed in a few seconds and thanks to the mcbans plugin they are now banned and have there accounts reputation lowered on all servers running the plugin.

I have raised the minimum reputation required to join the server to 7.5 (new accounts start at a rep of 10). If any one has any issue with the new reputation requirement let me know and i can make an exception for your account.

And thanks to Monkeyguy5000 for the detailed account of the events.

One option to solve this (another server I use does this) is to have scheduled reboot times, such as every x hours or so. Set up a script to inform the users before it goes down, stop the server, then start it up again. Hopefully that'd be a quick fix until you can find a more permanent solution.

It appears as thought we had another crash. I had the map opened before it happened, and Floreat and Jew_Prine were exploring beyond the far regions of the map.
Coincidentally, another server crashed the same time as us

Edit: I also had two .jar errors when I reloaded the map at first. Afterwards, it didn't load at all for me.

It's very possible. Thanks for sharing what happened on your end Smile
A theory I'm thinking of is world generation, or perhaps the map loading newly generated terrain. It'll be interesting to see what it is, and now that Dan has some more information, it hopefully will contribute to a solution

Post subject:  RE:CompSci.ca Minecraft Server (now online at CS1.ca, updated to 1.8.1)

It should be back online for now. Also there are now fourms for the server up at http://cs1.ca

Restarting automaticly is an option but a bit more difficult then it may seem. If the server is not shut down properly it can roll back a few minutes and the time it takes the server to shut down is not constant (when there is low memoery it can take over 15 minutes). It is also hard to check if the server is in a online, offline or crashed state in a restart script. The time it takes for the memeory to be used is also not constant, today it crashed 3 times, and was fine for almost 2 days strait before that. The best option maybe to go thorugh each plugin one at a time to try and find the leak but i have not had a chance.

Edit: Note that the live maps at maps.cs1.ca will be down for a bit, i think they may be causing the leak.

Ship Building "Contest"

After coming to a realization that ship building is my weakest link (it's terrible, kill me now Shocked ), I thought it would be interesting to hold a sort of ship building "contest" to get other people into some building spirit.
All that you need to do is go to the Creative world and build a ship. Place your IGN and the name of your ship on a sign nearby.

There are no limits to entries

What types of ships can I build?
- Battleships
- Cargo ships
- Yachts
- Pirate ships
- Ships you might expect in a city port
- If you don't want to do water ships: blimps or small air crafts

What style should I go for?
Preferably wooden ships; stuff you'd expect to see in the medieval and pre-Industrial era.
Interior design is not required
You may play loosely around these preferences

Are there restrictions?
No. If you are making a water ship, then there are none.
Air ships and blimps should be small or medium-sized.
Preferably, cargo ships, yachts, and smaller ships should be 9 wide, 17 long, and 6 below below deck/water level

Who is judging?
I will be, and I will be asking Dan and one other, and ask Dan to pick someone else to help judge as well.

What's the chance of winning?
Quite high. If you participate and it looks good, then you'll win. There's lots of space for ships!
If you are doing an air ship, there will be a cap of accepted entries. 4 or 5 will be accepted. If the air ships go really well, there might make an airport!

Do I win anything?
Yes! If we approve of your ship, it will be imported into the city map that is under construction. Your name and the name you have given your ship will be kept with it to give you credit. Your ship will be part of the city and aid in increasing the greatness of it and it's role in the exploration we as a server want to convey to ourselves and others straying for their own realm.

Submitting a game to a university :O ? I haven't heard that one before...are you trying to use it to get an admission?
Anyways, minecraft is programmed very inefficiently in Java...it's not that Notch is better than us (well he is better than me, but not everyone here), it's just that he has a lot of good ideas and the enthusiasm to implement them.

I don't think he was trolling but genuinely interested.

When you post on a thread, realize you're probably notifying (emailing) every person in that thread. If someone realizes you posted 'Hey thanks for this.' or 'You should have done the box in blue.' for a game written 2+ years ago, you've got to realize that people here are usually in High School, so by then they've graduated. So there's a good chance they just wont answer. It's like reminiscing about how cool that inside joke was with people who don't know it.

The only thing I'd personally let by is for tutorials or stickys, as they're meant to be necro'd, so long as your adding onto the topic.

In this case your questions had nothing to do with the CS.ca's Minecraft server, so everyone's up in a fuzz. Make a new topic and you might get more serious responses.

There's no deadlines really, since the city is a slow process. And sure. There's pretty much 2 airships that have been entered so far however.

Post subject:  Re: CompSci.ca Minecraft Server (now online at CS1.ca, updated to 1.8.1)

Since 1.0.0 is adding a heck of a lot to the game, I had a few thoughts:

1. The Nether: Other than 2 small floating towers, the Nether on the server is pretty empty. With 1.0.0 adding a ton of new things to it, I think it might be a good idea to delete the entire CS City world Nether (WHEN the 1.0.0 bukkit version is out). It can then be regenerated.
Pros of this are more glow stone (which is pretty much the main reason we go there), and there's better possibilities of a Nether stronghold being closer to the portal.
Cons are that everything is lost, but the floating castles can easily be rebuilt. Maybe the items already there can be moved into one of the Newbie Institutes? It's manly cobble and stone pickaxes.
We could also have a community project, with people making paths to strongholds, and maybe setting up a small community base near the main portal to have basic supplies (like cobble and stone picks)

2. There's also the problem of 1.0.0. Not sure if it generates the same smooth river pattern it did for 1.8. The good thing is that there isn't much explored land past the 1.7/1.8 boundaries.
Occupied 1.8 Territories are Isaac's home (North of Port Royal), Alex and Sab's homes (North of CS City), the Hidden Mines base (Ranging South of CS Town to South of Area 52), the Hidden Mine's Stronghold base (North of Area 52 and the only known stronghold on the map (The 3 strongholds needed to be a certain amount of blocks from 0,0,0 in 1.8)). Other than a possible base far East of Death Valley, there's not much else in use.
The only real benefit of replacing unoccupied 1.8 territory with 1.0.0 is more strongholds, and Snow/Mycelium biomes.

3. A few bugs are on the server: grass spread (stopped working randomly over a month ago), no damage by Ghasts (actually a benefit :p), and Cave Spiders are spawning without a spawner (the worst of the worst). Hopefully the 1.0.0 recommended stable will fix that.

So yeah, just some thinking I thought I'd share. There has yet to a 1.0.0 recommended stable from Bukkit, and they're on version 1565.

Some of the server uses updated without saving their 1.8.1 jar file, so it's kind of quiet right now. Hopefully they find a jar if they're trying to get on :p If anyone is interested in a 1.8 jar, feel free to ask, and I'll upload it somewhere for a download.

Generated terrain will probably have a visible seam where 1.8 meets 1.0. A river that was partially generated in 1.8 might not be a river in 1.0 or may not continue the same way.

I checked the whole boundary thing. Betas 1.6 and 1.8 generation is actually just a whole new chunk with no smooth transition. Much is the same for Beta 1.8 and 1.0.0.
Dan must've edited in the river as a smooth "seam" between the two, which I suppose would be the case with new 1.0.0 lands.
