Posted Image, might have been reduced in size. Click Image to view fullscreen.

I thought I'd share with you guys the final project me and a classmate have been working on.

Hopefully it will inspire you guys to do even greater things. Razz

http://cconquest.ath.cx/cconquest/cconquest.zip

The server is done in perl and is run 24/7 off my linux box. Make sure you login with someone else so you can actually see how it works for yourself.
Maps are loaded dynamically from the server each time you change maps, so expect things to look different each time you login.

All account/char info is stored on a mysql server. It's pretty neat!

EDIT: This isn't a finished project, but when we're done I'll probobally discuss with my classmate on whether to enter your contest.

EDIT2: Included is the map editor, made by my classmate (James McLean). Feel free to make maps and submit them to rbtaylor@kingston.net. They might end up on the server!

Thanks for your time,
Robert Taylor

You should make an email account where we can submit bugs since we can't edit our posts here.

Found another, if you enter the house with the stairs in the roof, then walk down inside the house, if you go forward you leave the house because of where your warp spot is.

Post subject:  RE:[BETA1] Online RPG

this is pretty cool. you should put in quests and randomly generating dungeon maps and be able to trade items. and i noticed that your character goes block-by-block. can you make it so that he goes half a block each step for fluidity(and smoothness)? you already know that the next block is open so just take a half step into it.

Author:  Robert [ Sat Jan 13, 2007 11:17 pm ]
Post subject:  RE:[BETA1] Online RPG

E-mail rbtaylor@kingston.net for bugs.

Also, I've made the movement the way it is for network reasons. If I were to do it by half-block I'd have to send twice the number of packets (And Turing's .NET module is pretty crap)

Prince: I know about that bug, I can fix it easily.

that makes me #30, right? Razz

Pretty neat. Wish someone else was online though ^_^

I know this is still a work in progress, but is there anything other than walking around the map? am I missing the menu button or somthing? lol. I clicked Esc and it froze; says - Finished, so im guessing that was to exit game, meaning you need a window.close or somthin after it....

oh, and i liked not being able to go up those stairs in the bar place. 'Sorry, level 1 theif. you are too weak and pathetic to RISE UP THE STAIRS OF ULTIMATE DISTRUCTION'.

Well, i cant wait to see this go far.

oh, when you enter the castle, as you probably know, you spawn on a wall. You cant move on it, other than to the right, which sends you back out of the castle. if you ask me, its a damn good defense against invaders. Also, if you dont plan on using them for somthing else, It'd be cool if you also made WASD also the movement keys. Arrow keys make me cry, lol.

Yah, I always planned on doing it but never followed through.

Now that there is a snow day I guess I'll have time to implement it.

If you haven't seen CC in action yet, the coolest feature is the dynamic maps. When playing online, if a staff member is editing a map, you'll see the changes happening as you play.

EDIT: Remm, I got your bugs for the Map Editor and forwarded them to my partner. He was the one who did the map editor. As for the name text, I thought I fixed that in the last version. They should be yellow? I'm putting a cap on name length now.

EDIT2: Eric, I don't have any intention on releasing the sourcecode. (At least not untill I've handed my project). If I continue working on this game after classes end, I probobally won't release the source since it will reveal security threats.

Thanks for the offer, but we're pretty content with my modest linuxbox :p

And yah, you're free to write your own client if you want, lol! If it turns out better then mine I'd use yours as the official one. I've put all my work into the Server, so the client is kind of lackluster.

In case you're wondering why you're all getting "Wrong Version. Please Update.", I've fixed the majority of the bugs listed here. (And obviously it also checks version now)

I'll post an announcement when I have the update up for download.

And seven months seems like a long time. This was built in about a month. Although I have quite a bit of network experience with Perl, VB.NET, Java, and C++ too, so that made development alot swifter.

I'll keep you guys updated!

Anyways, the daily load of bugs:

First of all, when you enter a new area, anyoen in there, it makes them face one set direction, not the one that is shown to the player that is playing.

Secondly, you'll notice a HELLUVA lotta accounts that popped up. thats from all of us making extra accounts and playing with like 5 people at once. You gotta make it so only one CC can be open at a time. Screenshot of me and my hoes proves it Razz

I've been getting lag issues all today =S

Author:  Robert [ Mon Jan 15, 2007 9:20 pm ]
Post subject:  RE:[BETA1] Online RPG

In response to why they're facing one direction: It's because you haven't received any information regarding which way they're going. I don't think direction is that big of a deal.

Multiple Connections from one IP: This is so that I could test everything from one computer. Once everything is pretty secure I'll just uncomment the code that kicks off cheaters.

Prince Pwn, what kind of internet do you have? Out of the dozens of users that have connected I've only noticed that about two of them had lag issues. One had dial-up and the other's computer just sucked badly. It might also be a problem on my end, since I'm hosting the server.

P.S. Remm, see how many users you can get in a room together before the client explodes. 20 fps for 6 users seems perfect.

Ok... we really didint get too far. Me and this 'whateva' guy did it since zayman was nowhere to be found. Once we got a few people, the server like gave out.

Oh, and we did this AFTER you put the restriction of only 1 open at a time on, so that means your restrictor is flawed :/
Once i started shoving characters in after it gave out, they could only walk around start area (as seen with remm'shoe2.

Oh.. and i think servers down now... ^_^ i cant get back in, lol.
So... between the two of us, 12(ish) brought down the server. I supect, as said before, with more human players, we coulda gotten alot further (as with yesterday, the 20(ish) online)

Alright... I've deleted the accounts/char requested.

I noticed what you meant about the servers crashing. It didn't "crash". It allows connections, however it doesn't seem to send any responses back to the clients.

I've now left the server up in a terminal, so I can see where things start crapping out.

If you have time, try to do the exact same thing you did before.

Oh, and I also haven't enabled the one-IP security thing yet, since we're still testing.

Note to the user creating perverted user names: Your IP has been logged and you have been reported to the administrative team of compsci.ca. I'll let them deal with you there. As for CC, your IP addresses are the first to go on the nearly complete banning system. I'll be banning your whole ISP (so you don't think about renewing your address), so thanks for ruining things for others that might live near you.

The same goes for people who are impersonating myself and James. Anyone who doesn't have the accounts "Robert" or "James" are not staff. I've had people come on with the name "Admin".

hehe, sorry man, but no, i dont.

Just a few pointers...

--make sure nothing has been bugged (sometimes, when you select a new tile, random tiles will be reverted back to grass or other). Make sure these tiles are fixxed before submitting

--It doesnt have to take up the whole area. For example, look at both the bar levels. just make what it looks outside basically the same, even if your inside is a little bigger.

--make sure you arnt cutting off giant portions of the map (like your second floor). This enters uselessness, and is very cramped for larger number of players

--dont spam stuff. For example, the amount of crossed swords in floor 2 was just crazy exessive. A little here and there can look good at times, but there is such a thing as too much. Too much flare makes it hard to look at :/

--no rainbows. Dont use multi-tilesetish. if one peice of the wall is super dark, unless it can fit well, somthing crazy light on non-attaching to the walls will look totaly out-of-place.

And thats all I got atm.... WoW exp out... gunna check it out Razz
I b makin maps later, so if you want to improve the tower, nows the time Very Happy

Hey guys!

Sorry about the last couple days.

Yesterday I forgot to re-run the server after a reboot. (It was a busy day. I had to perform in a big vocal concert at school)

And today there was a massive power outage in my area (we got sent home from school).

That is the reason for the error you all are getting. In the next version, you'll just get a simple "Server is Down" error message.

Thanks for helping out, guys!

EDIT: I just noticed I've recieved a bunch of new maps. I'll be uploading them to the server right now. Within 15 minutes I'll have all the warps working.

Well..few problems, heres what I found:
1)if your internet D/Cs well your playing you can't get back onto the acount because your still logged in
2)as of now if you try and cross the bridge you get a fatal runtime error

Suggestion:
1) add some sort of code to remember usernames (not passwords =P) and automatically put them in

Now can you please delete the last few acounts I made... they include:
brendon
sharksfan
and the ones where I used (as a char name):

Well..few problems, heres what I found:
1)if your internet D/Cs well your playing you can't get back onto the acount because your still logged in
2)as of now if you try and cross the bridge you get a fatal runtime error

Suggestion:
1) add some sort of code to remember usernames (not passwords =P) and automatically put them in

Now can you please delete the last few acounts I made... they include:
brendon
sharksfan
and the ones where I used (as a char name):
Hack.saw
hacksaw
sharkz

Thanks =P

When your interrnet disconnects, the server should notice that you've left...

As for part 2 (as you know, since I'm online with you right now), it seems to be an isolated incident with you alone. Make sure port 2543 and 2544 are open on your router/firewall.

Oh, and I uploaded the maps I recieved. The tower has been updated (it's now much cleaner) and we have a nice desert area with a cave that leads to a treasure chest.

Yeah after I d/c I reconnect, log on, then it tells me an account is allready online with that name =/ . My firewall is off atm, how would I go about opening them on the router?

Well, I know that there is problem for you when you load a new map.

However, you can successfully download the map from the map server. We know this because you had the map in your maps folder with the correct data.

The fact that you are getting a NET error is what's confusing me the most. If the map is successfully retrieved, then there shouldn't be any reason for the NET module to get mad at us.

I'm thinking that there might be a problem with closing the connection. I'll know more once the new version is out. Then I can pinpoint the exact line it's crapping out.

Version 01.18.07 is now out.

Just run cconquest.exe and it will automatically download the update for you.

I've recieved an error

Quote:
An run-time error has occurred in this program.
Line 87 of <Unknown file #39>: Quit #1.

Is that the error that tells me that the server is down, J/W?

Yes the server is 100% down, thanks to me Smile

They should be careful in what they allow in their user names and passwords. I simply placed a % (which is a line commenting out character) and poof, server crash.
(Unsure if I should come out and say this, but oh well, too later)

Post subject:  RE:[BETA1] Online RPG

LOL

No, you did not crash the server Tycoon. % is not parsed as a comment in a string variable.

That is the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard.

In fact, the server didn't crash at all. :S

Next time you get an error like that, look at the client window.

It should say "Map server is currently down. Please try Again!"

So the map server went down, but the main server didn't... I'll look into this.

So do you have different errors now if you can't connect that will tell you if the server is down at your end, if the server is down at my end, too many players, etc?

few issues

mostly cliping errors

2nd part of desert dungeon

2ns floor of tower
Posted Image, might have been reduced in size. Click Image to view fullscreen.

everything else looks fine

though

what you should do when u ahve stairs that aren't curently linked to other maps make em work as walls instead of being able to go through them...

same with unmade cities (like in desert)

also implementation of an admin rights such as

certain user ips being flagged are allowed to call certain commands such as

/kick [name] disconnects the user from the server *temp an of 1 min?*
/mute [name] flags the user making him not beable to pass messages to the rest of the ppl *mgith display an "m" above his name to indicate him being muted

/unmute [name] unflags user

thats about it good work cheers!

Yah, I actually found those density issues a couple days ago. I have since forgotten about them.

I'll have them fixed in the next update.

As for the admin commands, they are already in (as many of my guinea pigs saw a couple nights ago).

I had not thought of the mute command though... good call.

Post subject:  Re: [BETA1] Online RPG

can i help with the admin testing since i have been helpfull in finding bugs such as ||| and density issues...etc.

XD

i see

typing / before any message is taken as a command

trying adding

/quit (logs of and terminates)

/logoff (back to start menu)

/admintest displays admin lvl
probably add a /help command
which list possible commands

also multiple admin levels also having admin gives ur name different colours

ie..

0 = default user can only call "help" command <--white

1 = game mod ->> as ability to mute players <-- green

2 = game admin ->> has ability to kick players and mute <-- blue

3 = server admin ->> has ability to ban (and other powers subsequently) <-- red

Looks good, apart from there being nothing to do yet. Wink

You seem to have input error trapped well, and the only bug I could find is going through some solid tiles. I'll try messing around a bit more if you make it worth it. Smile Good work.

If you added sound would it create much of a lag? Also I don't think you can do this is Turing, but a sound level adjustment as well would be nice.

Also when you make a new character or go to log in, there should be a back button or pressing backspace to go back would be nice.

Alright, we now have our site up:

http://cconquest.ath.cx

It's for our external documentation package, and contains alot of guides.

We've also added command-line commands (see the guide for details), and a few NPCs.

Soon you will be able to talk to the NPCs.

Furthermore, a nice little forest has been added to the east of the starting village.

lol

I'm surprised people are still posting here months after I stopped.

I put up the server again, in case people want to check it out. I really have no plans to continue this project, since it was just done for school.

You can connect now, but good luck finding anyone else online. Also, if for some reason my server loses power or the perl server crashes, I probobally won't remember to put it back up.

If there is some kind of Turing Final Projects competition, I'd like this to be judged.
