So I bought myself a nice new camera and so far I am very satisfied with it. However, I have clearly been letting the members of cs.ca down by not posting pictures.

did you edit any of them?

Wow! Do you have them in 1024x768 so I can set them as my desktop? Wink

*edit* Never mind, found the 1600x1200 originals. I think I'll set the second one as my wallpaper for now.

Post subject:  RE:Pictures from the new camera (big pictures)

I have them in sizes up to 3648x2736 Wink

I *was* going to link to the originals... but for now I prefer to leave it to people to figure out on their own if they want to.

Incidentally, I grant all cs.ca members the right to use the images for any non-profit personal use. Anything more and I expect money Wink

Yeah I was just thinking that I should probably ask before you sue me or something. Well, done and done. Wink

They're a bit bright, however that was easily mended... Err... We have permission to modify the images too, right? Shifty

What's the model of the camera? Very very nice though. I'm almost certain you edited some of them right?

Author:  md [ Thu Jun 19, 2008 8:20 pm ]
Post subject:  RE:Pictures from the new camera (big pictures)

They are all HDR shots; so "editing" isn't really the right word.

Basically a whole lot of shots get taken at different exposures. Then you use a computer to generate a high dynamic range image from the original shots. Finally you tone-map the HDR into LDR's (low definition range - standard images). I go a bit further and do multiple tone-mappings and then merge them together as overlays in GIMP.

The camera is an Olympus E510; with the kit 14-45mm lens. I also have some older OM lenses that I'm gonna give a try too; but they are very difficult to focus and aren't quite as high quality as the kit lens. On the other hand.... 1m lenses are rather kick ass... Wink

They do look enhanced, but he explained it. It's all about the color and contrast, I think (in non camera porn fanatic terms).

That cloudy sky is KICK ASS though.

md, how do you take so many pictures at different exposures, wouldnt the camera move in between shots? or do you use a tripod?
or am i missing something that only photographers know?

Author:  md [ Fri Jun 20, 2008 12:49 pm ]
Post subject:  RE:Pictures from the new camera (big pictures)

For some of them I use a tripod; like the waterfall ones. Actually the majority of them are on a tripod.

My camera has a feature called "Exposure Bracketing" though; which means it will take three pictures at 0, -1EV, +1EV one right after the other. It's possible to do hand-held shots that way and get minimal movement.

The third way is to shoot RAW. RAW images have enough information in them that you don't need to shoot multiple exposures.

And no, I am not a member of the Ontario Cobalt Club. I've never even heard of them.

oh, ok that makes sense then, i figured it was something along the lines of shooting in quick succession.

I was just wondering about the OCC because one of my good friends from Mississauga has a Cobalt SS, and is a member, if he sees a cobalt on the road, he'll wave to whoever is driving it.

Only sometimes....

EDIT: I dislike stitching panorama's with clouds because well.... clouds move, sometimes quite quickly too, which is not so cool. I'll see if I can get some pictures of what I get up to during the summer, no promises though.

md, I have a challenge for you. Please take some pictures and don't do the HDR treatment. I'd love to see some shots with less of the watercolor impressionist look. Smile

Oh, and for the record, I am a photo geek too. I have a Pentax K10D with three lenses (Pentax DA 18-55mm f3.5-5.6, Pentax FA 50mm f1.4, Tamron Di LD Macro 70-300mm f4-5.6), a Lowepro Voyager S neckstrap and a Manfrotto 725b ballhead tripod.

My next lens purchase will exceed the value of my camera body. It will almost certainly be a Sigma HSM 70-200mm f2.8 lens.

Already done - I simply haven't linked to them from here Wink
[edit]These pictures were all taken last night between 7:00 and 9:15. Due to the way the sun sets and the fact that I was being eaten alive by mosquitos they aren't all as nice as could be - I chose high ISO and low shutter speeds over spending more then 5s in one place. Stupid bugs... [/edit]

Equipment wise I've got some decent stuff - but wtd's lenses are nicer. My lenses tend to be slower and not designed for digital photography; however I do have a whole heck of a lot more Wink

I have the Olympus E510 body with 7 lenses (Olympus Four-Thirds 14-42mm f3.5-5.6 ED lens, Olympus OM 28mm f3.5, Olympus OM 50mm f1.8, Olympus OM 50mm f3.5 Macro, Olympus OM 200mm f5, Olympus OM 35-70mm f4, Olympus OM 85-250mm f5), Olympus OM 2X-A Teleconverter, two complete sets of Olympus OM macro extension tubes, and an Olympus OM to Four-Thirds mount. I also have two tripods - a light-weight Giottos VT809 tripod with a three-way panhead, and a SILK tripod of unknown model (SILK 88 perhaps?) again with a three-way panhead. Except for the camera body, the first lens, and hte first tripod all the equipment I own is older then me. I'm also exceedingly happy with it (especially now that I have mostly figured out how to take decent shots with the OM lenses, no focusing reticule + no auto-focus == difficult.

Yes... sigh.

And I saw another very nice accessory I have fallen in love with. I was called upon to demo camera equipment for customers and played with a K20D with the battery grip. ~$156 out of the lens budget, though, if I go for it. But, that's with tax, and the going price pre-tax anywhere else in Canada is $200.

I'm sorry for raining on your parade but those look like they were taken in radioactive zones. I much prefer your non hdr'ed ones. My opinions don't really matter so don't mind me.

Post subject:  RE:Pictures from the new camera (big pictures)

I agree that HDR isn't teh end-all be-all; it just happens to be the ones I've posted Wink

The tracks shot is great - but it needs better light. I should see about going for a walk sometime when the sun is high in the sky... and probably with a polarizing filter.

Author:  Neo [ Mon Jun 23, 2008 9:03 pm ]
Post subject:  Re: Pictures from the new camera (big pictures)

I don't think the light is the problem. The worst time to take a picture is during high noon when the sun gives off the harshest light. The problem is there is to much contrast between the sky and the ground and your camera is exposing for the sky thus your ground is underexposed. I'd suggest a gradual neutral density filter or bracket two shots, one for sky and one for ground and merge them in photoshop.

The included plastic stand. The flash and camera body can communicate wirelessly, so the stand comes in handy for some basic off-camera strobing.
