How do I connect a my Linksys adapter to a router in ubuntu?
This is what I did, I would appreciated if someone could correct my steps.

1) System>Administration>Networking
2) Clicked on the Wireless Netwrok Adapter
3) Clicked on properties and filled everything in.
4) Made the Wireless Netwrok Adapter active.
5) Set it as my network connection.
6) Clicked OK
7) Can't access the internet.

internet is very different from local network. can you access your local network? Try pinging the router to find out.

Assuming you can, make sure you have your DNS servers where they're supposed to be (resolv.conf for me...)

Another thing, the encryption type for my router is currently WPA. Is there any way to change this without reinstalling the software for the router?

Try typing dhcpd in a terminal.

You can change a lot of your router settings by hitting its address in an internet browser.

I did that, so what would the username and password be for the router?

should be Admin/admin

If that doesn't work, try no username with password admin.

You said you have a linksys adapter, but what router?
For linksys I think it's usually:
user: user
pass: admin

And D-Link:
user: admin
pass: [none]

It's been a long time, I don't know about Linksys. Of course your best bet would be the manual.

...and then your 2nd immediate task is to change your default password.

Hacking101: if you want your computer to be compromised really quickly, don't change any of your default networking passwords. Smile
